i love the refrain- he sounds so good- but i am confused on these lines: "For the young lovers taking the hill One plants the flag while the other is killed" something about sacrifice? i have no idea. but i love the "young love is us"

I take it as... well, like in combat games where you capture/move a flag, one person in this partnership succeeds in their goal while the other loses.

The way I understand it is that you put up a flag after conquest (climbing the hill as an image of taking troubles to achieve something, to get to the top). The image of the American flag on the moon comes to my mine ;) It's basically about fighting for what you want, and at the same time taking risks because you might also fall or get hurt while cliumbing that mountain.
And only the strong ones reach the top. Am I making any sense? :)

when i first heard this song, i felt that it was about a young couple, one of which was a soldier going to war...
hmm...I thought it was..."still want her even though I get less than she takes"...?
Anyway...for me this song is about taking chances and risks in love and relationships, "woman I'm taking risk here that no one dared and you're scared, scared of the bottom, afraid of the stairs"...and about being afraid to fall in love as you can get hurt. How you feel like you're giving your all to that person...doing everything you can for them...yet they aren't doing the same for you, "still want her in the know I get less than she takes". It's about the journey of a relationship, how one person is giving more than the other and how tough and hard love can be...but on the other hand...how beautiful and innocent it can be. I also think that one of them was hurt through the relationship..."what did I get into, now everything is untrue, your eyes tell the lies of the lines that you said" and how they were hurt so much that they wished they'd never met them so it would erase the pain. Basically...the song is about young love...the hardships...the innocence...the beauty...the pain...everything. Falling in love...is like taking a giant leap into the unknown...and that to me...is what this song is about =]
