Heart Songs Lyrics

Gordon Lightfoot sang a song about a boat that sank in the lake at the break of the morning
A Cat named Stevens found a faith he could believe in
And Joan Baez, I never listened to too much jazz
But hippie songs could be heard in our pad
Eddie Rabbitt sang about how much he loved a rainy night
Abba, Devo, Benatar were there day John Lennon died
Mr. Springsteen said he had a hungry heart
Grover Washington was happy on the day he topped the charts, these are the songs

These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singin'

Quiet Riot got me started with the bangin' on my head
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Slayer taught me how to shred
I gotta admit though, sometimes I would listen to the radio
Debbie Gibson, tell me that you think we're all alone
Michael Jackson's in the mirror, I've gotta have faith if I wanna see clear
Never gonna give you up, wish me love or wishing well
It takes two to make a thing go right, If the Fresh Prince starts a fight
Don't you worry for too long 'cause you know these are the songs

These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing

Back in 1991, I wasn't havin' any fun
'Till my roommate said "come on and put a brand new record on"
Had a baby on it, he was naked on it
Then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had upon me
Got together with my bros, in some rehearsal studios
Then we played our first rock show and watched the fan base start to grow.
We signed with David, gave us dough to make a record all our own
The song come on the radio, now people go: this is the song

These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing

These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing

The song is completely self-explanatory, so I'll just list the references in order:

Gordon Lightfoot - "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (1976) Cat Stevens (the artist) famously became a Muslim. Joan Baez - "Children and All That Jazz" (1975) / artist Eddie Rabbitt - "I Love A Rainy Night" (1980)

Artists: Abba, Devo, Pat Benatar, John Lennon (died in 1980) Bruce Springsteen - "Hungry Heart" (1980) Grover Washington - "Just the Two of Us" (1981) - His highest charting song

Metal bands: Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer

Debbie Gibson (actually Tiffany) "I Think We're Alone Now" (1987) - Rivers made a mistake but decided to leave it in. Both were pop idols of the 80s.

Michael Jackson - "Man in the Mirror" (1988) George Michael - "Faith" (1987) Rick Astley - "Never Gonna Give You Up" (1987) "I can see clearly"? Presumably not the classic Johnny Nash 70's song?

Terence Trent D'Arby - "Wishing Well" (1987) Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - "It Takes Two" (1988) DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Possibly: "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson" (1989)

Nirvana - "Nevermind" (1991)

Weezer are signed to David Geffen's company.

[Edit: Tidy up]

Damn. Want to edit to add that Cat Stevens became a Muslim in 1977 -- and that it's possible that I'm wrong about Joan Baez: There could be a song from 1978/8 that River is referring to.

Weezer were signed to Geffen in 1993.

... isnt it supposed to be (attention to the quotes):

Alright, putting an end to the Nirvana/Pixies argument - he's talking about Nirvana. Don't you guys know anything about Rivers/Weezer? Nirvana might be their/his biggest influence. Hell, they once played a whole show under a different name and played nothing but Nirvana covers. Google it, it's easy to find and listen to on YouTube.

Rivers was like so many of the rest of us...Nevermind was a watershed moment in music, an amazing record that changed our lives and made us want to form bands of our own. Just like other seminal records of rock's past like Nevermind the Bollocks, Velvet Underground & Nico, etc

Besides, you can draw a direct line from the Pixies, particularly Surfer Rosa, to Nevermind. The prior was a huge influence on the latter, as Cobain acknowledged. So if Cuomo has stated the Pixies were a big influence, that only makes since - I had the same experience. Loved Nirvana, found Pixies through Kurt talking about them, then found I really liked the Pixies as well, probably because of the obvious similar mindset if not sound, and was subsequently influenced by both.

i think rivers is talking about how personal music is for his life (which reflects back on the listener). he talks about all these artists and guilty pleasures of his and then realizes that his band releases "heart songs" for other listeners to treasure in their lives. and the cycle repeats on and on...

This song really is extremely original, especially for Weezer. I am really digging the verse melodies, and the lyrics to the bridge are especially fantastic. I love how it turns around to suggest that Weezer songs are now the "heart songs" to us. So true.

I really like these lyrics:

"Back in 1991, I wasn't havin' any fun 'Till my roommate said "come on and put a brand new record on" Had a baby on it, he was naked on it Then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had upon me"

I like the allusion to Nirvana ("Had a baby on it, he was naked on it"). It really shows the effect of music upon Rivers himself.

Yeah. "Nevermind" by Nirvana. That was a great allusion, considering he is fairly vague with it. Still, what other albums from 1991 have naked babies on them? 0.o --Thylacine
