Just because I'm losing
Doesn't mean I'm lost
Doesn't mean I'll stop
Doesn't mean I'm across
Just because I'm hurting
Doesn't mean I'm hurt
Doesn't mean I didn't get what I deserved
No better and no worse
I just got lost
Every river that I've tried to cross
And every door I ever tried was locked
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off.
You might be a big fish
In a little pond
Doesn't mean you've won
'Cause along may come
A bigger one
And you'll be lost
Every river that you tried to cross
Every gun you ever held went off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the firing's stopped
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off.
Doesn't mean I'm lost
Doesn't mean I'll stop
Doesn't mean I'm across
Doesn't mean I'm hurt
Doesn't mean I didn't get what I deserved
No better and no worse
Every river that I've tried to cross
And every door I ever tried was locked
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off.
In a little pond
Doesn't mean you've won
'Cause along may come
A bigger one
And you'll be lost
Every gun you ever held went off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the firing's stopped
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off
Oh, and I'm just waiting 'till the shine wears off.

I interpret this song as one person expressing how they faltered and got lost...but in the end they learned their lesson and came out alright...completely reminds me of my life! Amazing song!

"Just because I'm losing, doesn't mean I (or I've) lost."
"Just because I'm losing, doesn't mean I (or I've) lost."
It made more sense to me that way. Now it's confusing if it's really "doesn't mean I'M lost..." It would also fit better then with the next verse that says "doesn't mean you've won."

Is this just a typo/misunderstood lyric? Or is that really how CM wrote it??

in my opinion, this song means that even though your being beaten down doesnt mean you have to give in. someone can physicaly hurt you without hurting your feelings or resolve. i frikkin love this song, it reminds me to fight for a stand everyday :)
"Basically the song is about trying to get someone back. Realizing in the end that there is 'other fish in the sea' as everyone kept telling me. Truth is there is only one fish for me and I already knew that I just struggled to let the other fish off my hook. You can only fight for so long and then like the song says, I was just waiting for the shine to wear off. Once it did, I wasn't blind by my feelings of my ex but now I could finally see the truth of love at its finest. I got the best catch and I'll never release it."
Incredible.
"Lost?" is, I believe, the piano acoustic version of the album track, "Lost!". I find it hard to believe the album track can better this. It's far beyond what Fix You ever was in terms of beauty, and far beyond what Amsterdam ever was in terms of hurting me.
The lyrics are self-explanatory. Why they ring so true is not.
I actually just heard this song for the first time the other day. The music itself moved me, without listening to the lyrics.

I feel that he's trying to say that sometimes the exact definition of a word may not describe you, even though you may fit the criteria. Words can only go so far when describing how you feel. I feel that he's trying to say that sometimes the exact definition of a word may not describe you, even though you may fit the criteria. Words can only go so far when describing how you feel. If you lose someone, many people may then judge you and how your personality has changed, but in the inside, you feel a completely different way compared to what people think. To you, the world looks a completely different way then what others see it and the shine in life that you once saw slowly fades. When he says he's waiting, he just waiting until he becomes numb to things around him that he used to be passionate about because the person he loved so much is now gone. And when he's talking about every door is locked and so on, it simply means that whatever he does to try to move on, it doesn't seem to work, because you always will be thinking of that person.
"Doesn't mean I didn't get What I deserved No better and no worse"
To me, it's related to karma, and whether you are a good person or someone who has done bad, it doesn't matter, things will happen no matter what and that you can't control it. When he compares the big fish to the little pond, he's saying that no matter what or who you are, no matter how smart, pretty, or likeably you are, it doesn't mean the same thing can't happen to you.
Change that to "amazing guitar solo" for the album version!
This song is too cool. Love the "big fish" lyric.
love.my.sins, i think you need to reread those first couple stanzas. he says he isn't lost and he isn't hurt, not that he IS both of those things
lost! > lost?
sorry, but the non-acoustic version is much better.
Well both are better than Lost+. Plus my ass.

I love this song, especially the acoustic version which is utterly gorgeous. To me the lyrics sound like the captured solder of a revolution.
"Just because I'm losing Doesn't mean I'm lost Doesn't mean I'll stop Doesn't mean I would cross" Telling the King/oppressor: We may be down, but we are not out, we will keep fighting, we will not bow before you.
"Just because I'm hurting Doesn't mean I'm hurt" This is the only part I'm not sure about. It could be about torture, telling the interigater that he will not break.
"Doesn't mean I didn't get What I deserved No better and no worse
I just got lost Every river that I tried to cross Every door I ever tried was locked" I love this bit and can totally see it as him admitting that he went too far in his fight, that he still believes in his cause, but he choose the wrong way to support it which is why he got caught: this is Karma.
"You might be a big fish In a little pond Doesn't mean you've won 'Cause a long may come A bigger one" You might control us now, but victory is not yet yours because there's always something (neighboring places, grassroots movement)/someone (all the opposing people/the real king/God) that is stronger than you.
"And you'll be lost Every river that you tried to cross Every gun you ever held went off Ohhh and I'm... Just waiting until the firing stopped Ohhh and I'm... Just waiting 'til the shine wears off" Now that he can't fight he has to wait until "The King's" plans cause his own doom and others see the truth, find the worm beneath the shiny surface and (insert relevant bad guy here) is finally given his just desserts.
I love this song. My Senior Year has been a kinda roller coaster, so I think I ended up feeling pretty lost.
I like "Violet Hill", liked "Viva la Vida" even better, and this song.... I absolutely love. Already I am ranking this in Coldplay's top 5 with the likes of "Fix You" This song is just amazing. No explanation needed. Chris Martin is a genious and this song will shun any thoughts that Coldpay changed their style for the worst. This song does a great job of making me want to cry
