Annie Lyrics
There was a girl named Annie
She had a very pretty face
And not the way you would think so
Let me see if I can try to explain it
She had a smile that could light up a room
And if she moved it’d be moving in you
But she wasn’t like a magazine
She was just plain Jane
Her name was Annie
She never looked in the mirror
She never liked what she would see
And even if I tried to tell her
She never listened to a word I’d say
She always wanted what she never had
But never had what she needed so badly
Someone telling her she was fine
And that’s not right
And it's why I’m saying
Annie don’t be shy here
Annie don’t just lie there
Looks don’t make the world go round
But it comes around
Annie don’t be shy here
Annie please don’t cry here
I always have to stop myself
Cause you’re beautiful
I didn’t know if I could tell her
I didn’t know if I could make her see
She didn’t need to find her beauty
She didn’t need to find a way to show me
They took her moments of feeling alive
And made them moments of dying inside
She needed someone to scream her name
To take her pain
And it's why I'm screaming
Annie don’t be shy here
Annie don’t just lie there
Looks don’t make the world go round
But it comes around
Annie don’t be shy here
Annie please don’t cry here
I always have to stop myself
Cause you’re beautiful
And Annie
You are the one sight my eyes never tire of
It's like I cannot get enough of you
Annie
You are the one song left in my symphony
Like you were made for me
Annie don’t be shy here
Annie don’t just lie there
Looks don’t make the world go round
But it comes around
Annie don’t be shy here

I think you are all going in the right direction with this.
But I disagree.
I believe that the girl in this song is ugly. Flat out ugly. Even the singer sees it, but his point is that he doesn't care that she isn't attractive. He is trying to tell her that she doesn't need sparkling beauty to be with him. He thinks she is beautiful as she is.
He says, "She didn't need to find her beauty, she didn't need to find a way to show me." In plain words, he is saying, "Honey, you don't need to be pretty to impress me.
He also states, "She had a very pretty face, but not the way you would think so." This, obviously, states that she is not pretty the way YOU would think so. But to him, she is a treasure. A real piece of art.
What angers the singer the most is that people deliberately point it out to put her down. He says, and you can tell it hurts him by the tone of his voice, "They took her moments of feeling alive, and made them moments of dying inside." He hates that people would try to put her down for not being attractive. He sees her as the "one song left in his symphony" no matter how beautiful she is.
True... But also, not true. Think about it like this:
True... But also, not true. Think about it like this:
He loves her for who she is. So he thinks she is beautiful. I don't believe that "Annie" is ugly. But maybe, to others, she's not as beautiful as the movie stars and the magazine covers. But he still thinks she is beautiful... Like, there's not a doubt in his mind that says she is ugly. But others think that she is... As for the "you don't need to find a way to show me" I think that means that she doesn't need to wear makeup and tight clothes around...

This is probably one of the sweetest, most sincere songs I have heard in a long time. I think it's about more than him just being a nice guy and trying to make her feel better. To me it sounds like he's in love with her, and it kills him that she feels the way she does and that people have treated her so badly. By singing this song, I think he is essentially trying to get her to open up and realize that she doesn't have to feel guarded and insecure with him.
First off, its not "but she wasn't like a magazine" its "but it wasn't like a magazine".
Anyway, this is just an amazing song, probably my favorite song now. This song makes me think of this girl I am just absolutely crazy for, and think that she's by far the most beautiful girl in the world, and she too has self esteem issues. It's funny though that her name's actually angie. But anyway, the line that always gets to me is when he says "You are the one song left in my symphony like you were made for me".
As far as the meaning goes, I think everyone's got it right when they said it's about a girl who has low self esteem, probably a result of being hurt by past relationships (at least it seems that way in the second verse), and the singer wants to do everything he can to tell this girl that she's beautiful (She needed someone to scream her name, to take her pain, and it's why I'm screaming).
Oh and one more thing, I saw SafetySuit when they opened for Seether, and they were amazing live. I can't wait to see them again in February with 3 Doors Down. Hopefully 2009 will be the year these guys become huge.
Well for me, it's like my boyfriend wrote this song for me. Not only does this relate to my life, but my name is Annie.

Noo, I agree that Safetysuit is brilliant, but I really don't want them to become really famous. I've gotten so attached to these lyrics, and it's like, I don't want to share them. Gone Away is my personal escape from everything, and if everyone was to love it, then I just wouldn't feel like I was escaping anymore...
I've found that people's characters and personalities literally make them beautiful or not.
I think specifically of a gorgeous red-haired girl in a math class I once had, who I wanted to get to know better. One day she sassed somebody and showed herself to be an immature, crass brat. At that moment her looks had no effect on me, like a bubble burst.
I think of another girl who I knew well. I didn't really think she was pretty at first, but at some point, I think because of her happiness and friendliness and goodness, she literally became pretty to me. (And yes, I am using "literally" correctly.)
Ladies, one of the best things you can do to make yourself look better is to smile. Another thing -- I don't think women need to wear scanty clothing to be beautiful.
why are there seemingly no guys like you in my life?

I think that this song is about a girl, Annie, who isn't outwardly pretty, but has a great personality. The singer knows this, and despite her being a 'plain Jane', he's aware that her personality outweighs her physical looks, and he's trying to tell her that but she has a low self esteem. And she kind of can't see past that. He's trying to tell her that she's beautiful because of who she is, not just because of what she looks like.
And I think it's incredibly relatable. I mean, we all have insecurities, and sometimes it can be hard to look past what we consider our flaws. But then you have people, like the singer in this instance, who see past that, and can see who we really are, and he still finds her beautiful.
I love this song :)
Personally, to me it's about a guy (in this case Doug) singing to a girl, and virtually he is saying to her that she is beautiful inside and he doesn't care that she isn't pretty on the outside, unlike everyone else, who makes fun of her and "took her moments of feeling alive (being happy with who she is) and made them moments of dying inside (dreading waking up every morning because she knows she is going to be made fun of and critiqued again)." However, the girl doesn't believe him, and doesn't see he loves her despite her outward appearances and flaws. Although she isn't outwardly pretty, to the singer her soul is outrageously beautiful. :)
I love this song, and it is one of my favorites by this band. I am so glad I accidentally stumbled across Safetysuit a while back, or they wouldn't be my absolute favorite band as they are now! Thanks, Safetysuit, for the amazing music and for singing that there is more to a girl than what's on the outside. :)
Wow. No interest in hearing the song after that interpretation. How noble of him to decide if she is pretty on the outside or not. How bright of him for not realizing that there are differences of opinion. And how compassionate of him, although I doubt the girl in the song wants his pity. How lucky for him that he's the epitome of physical beauty. Must be difficult being so damn good looking and having to spend time with an ugly duckling. I'm gathering she's not a teenager either. Well, fuck her. Why does she even bother to live...

Okay, from what I'm seeing here from your reply is that you must have issues of our own to want to try to turn such a sincere, beautiful song into something like what you described. With your statement of "having no interest to hear that song" now after my interpretation, you obviously have never listened to the song thoroughly, or you would see he is pretty much crying out to Annie to say she is beautiful on the inside and is trying to lessen her pain. You were obviously being sarcastic when you called him compassionate , lucky, etcetera, but...

You were obviously being sarcastic when you called him compassionate , lucky, etcetera, but you must have missed the whole point I was trying to put out. Either that, or you just have some problems of your own you need to take care of, because I never meant to offend, but you obviously took it that way. I am sorry if something I said pushed you the wrong way, but I was simply stating my opinion on a song which is what we're SUPPOSED to do on here. I'm not trying to anger you, but I really wish you wouldn't leave replies like that when I was simply stating my opinion on an amazing song.
i live in a small town and you know how word gets around fast. the county had just redistricted the schools and i was moved to a brand new high school. in March, i had heard that a girl i had previously gone to school with before i went to this new school, hung her self. i used to be friends with her boyfriend but we hadn't associated in a while. when i had heard this song come on my ipod, i really listened to it and thought about what the words were saying. Tori was an extraordinary girl. she was picked on and no one thought to say anything to her to make things better for her. i just think now, if someone (even me) just went up to her one day prior to her death and just told her, 'Hey, you're looking nice today' or something to make her realize that she has more things ahead of her in this life. it's funny how just telling someone something simple like that can change their life. RIP Tori.
To me, this song is one of regret. A lot of the lyrics are in past tense, as though the singer knew these things when this girl was alive but never had the courage or possibly just never got around to saying them. A secret crush that never got the chance to be revealed. The song is in remembrance of her and the things he never said and wished he had.
i looove this fucking song! its beautiful.
