I think the song is about fighting in a war. My guess would be that in the first line he is asking his fellow soldiers if they "Are still alive" or "Scared inside." He blatently says the world "providence" which is being a guardian of something or someone. And then he says "When we've reached the end of the road I will carry us home," which is saying that if they make it through the war, he will bring his soldiers back.

sounds like a sidewalks part 2 kinda thing coz both of them are kinda nostalgic and they both talk about moving away from home, etc i like it :)
