No Promises Lyrics

A winter palace
From the Arabian nights
White waves on an ocean
Gems from a golden age

Life in your new world
Turning round and round
Making some sense
Where there's no sense at all
ONE

No promises
But if you should fall

Stars die in the silence
Of Arabian nights
Wind washes the seasons
In these days of a golden age

Life in your new world
Turning round and round
Making some sense
Where there's no sense at all
ONE

No promises
But if you should fall

I could give you more
Than just the shape of things
Break every word
Begin it all again
Your name on a white sheet
Pure lace shot with passion
LEARN as love lies
Bleeding in your hands

Heaven sends you
No promises
Of Arabian nights
No white waves on an ocean
No gems from a golden age

Life in your new world
Turning round and round
So make some sense
Where there's no sense at all
ONE

I give you
No promises
But if you should fall...YOU'RE FALLIN

No promises
But if you should fall
You fall

No promises
But if you should fall

No promises
But if you should fall
You fall

Life in your new world
As it turns round and round

No promises
But if you should fall

Every lyric site gets one word of this song wrong. I've submitted the correction above. Let me post the lyrics correctly here, along with the meaning that results. First, consider the speaker within the song. He's saying "heaven sends you...", "I give you..." "No promises That if you should fall, you fall."

This is our maker, however you wish to imagine it/him/her/them, speaking to human youth. This is entirely a human song, about humans, for humans. We are the profoundly imaginative species of Earth. We imagine beautiful, wondrous things for ourselves, about ourselves, about miracle planet Earth, our only home. But this world, new to the young, spins as an object in space, amidst chaos, the haphazard, the incidental. Young humans strive to understand, 'Making sense, where there's no sense at all!'

Sorry children of Earth, but there are "No promises, that if you should fall...". Your inner vision is illusion. If those illusions fall away....

The maker implores youth to look to the maker for insight into the depth of the world. "I could give you more than just the shape of things. Break every word [all the human symbols that are mere interpretations of what is real], begin it all again [your understanding of the world]. Your name on a white sheet, pure lace shot with passion." Your identity, your beauty, your passion, all could be seen through gained insight and wisdom.

The love you put into your imagined world will break your heart. You can fall and learn your illusions are not real. "But as love lies bleeding in your hands", remember that...

Heaven sends you... I give you... No promises that if you should fall" from your winter palace, your imagined world of interpretation, of things superficial...

I consider this to be a very Zen Buddhist lyric. To my mind it is mankind seen through the eyes of one ascended beyond the many and varied inner worlds that reside within all we humans. Buddha warns and implores us to end our suffering and grow our spirits, seek the depths of understanding, leaving behind that which is mere material, surface, imagination. Listen to what lies beyond...

My Interpretation

@DerekCurrie Lyric sites are such a joke. It's sometimes like they've NEVER even heard the song. I appreciate the time you devoted to your post, I agree. Icehouse is a great band and often overlooked. Thanks again.

@DerekCurrie I love your interpretation of this song which is one of my old time favorite. Thank you for that.

@DerekCurrie Regardless of your interpretation, you're wrong about what the lyrics are. Even aside from you know... being able to hear them... you can see in video when he's singing, what he's saying...
