The Last Parade on Ann Street Lyrics

The last parade on Ann Street babe
was when the frost leaves sounded like glass
when we burned down the whole damn block
with a wink and just one match
well the site I reside in now
it's new grove but same old ghosts
but I owe to the one before
cause it's the one that stained my voice
but the last one
yeah the last one
was to burn us out

Cover art for The Last Parade on Ann Street lyrics by Chris Bathgate

I wondered where/what it it about Ann Street, so I googled. Fascinating! Too long to quote here, but basically they have a tradition of a crazy Mardis Gras parade and week long celebration. They burned palms at their house parties, instead of at church and fires often started. Years later, the celebration evolved into a rememberance for victims of aids and Katrina and friends, reading their names and even carrying their ashes to put in the river.

Ann St is actually in Ann Arbor, MI, near where Chris Bathgate lives. It's an ordinary street, although very very beautiful in the fall-time.
