Too Late Lyrics
If I could separate me from myself, I'd stay away from me.
If you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, maybe it's not too late.
I will not loose you to the melting sky
Or to the mad parade
To the bloody jaws or the fire fall
Don't be afraid.
You need never know, a cold heart, heart of stone
Or lonely memory, you will never be alone
If I could separate me from myself, I'd stay away from me.
If you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, maybe it's not too late.
I will not loose you to a world that doesn't care
To the monsters that would have you.
Never surrender you, I always will be there
I will be there to wrap myself around you
I will not loose you to the dark or to the nights
To the terrible machine
Never let you loose your light
If I could separate me from myself, I'd stay away from me.
But if you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, don't fall away from me.
Don't pull away...
If I could separate me from myself, I'd stay away from me.
But if you think I belong, stay and keep me strong, maybe it's not too late.
If you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, maybe it's not too late.
Or to the mad parade
To the bloody jaws or the fire fall
Don't be afraid.
Or lonely memory, you will never be alone
If you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, maybe it's not too late.
To the monsters that would have you.
Never surrender you, I always will be there
I will be there to wrap myself around you
I will not loose you to the dark or to the nights
To the terrible machine
Never let you loose your light
But if you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, don't fall away from me.
But if you think I belong, stay and keep me strong, maybe it's not too late.

Why hasn't anyone commented this yet? My god. This song just fills me with a certain kind of hope. I think the songs about a man who's not proud of himself and his past mistakes and he's saying everything he will do from this point forward. Howardel is an excellent writer and I feel like he has always been somewhat in the shadows of Maynard. The other part of this song that I would like to comment on the lyric "I will not lose you to the melting sky" how the key shifts. my god that is awesome. :-]
I really like this song. I thought there would be more comments though. I agree with therockgoddess about it being someone who is not proud of themself. The first time i heard this was right after Me and my girlfriend broke up.The way it sounds to me is he is in a relationship that is coming to an end, and he feels like it is because he has done things he isnt proud of. " If i could separate me from myself I'd stay away from me." He is saying that she is right in not wanting to be with him. I think he still wants to be with this person because he says "If you decide I'm wrong and you can wait maybe its not to late." I think he wants to try to change or make up for what he has done, and saying that if she thinks he is wrong or can wait for him to get things with with his self straight that he will always be there for her.
I could be completely wrong, but that is just how i feel about this song.
well, maynard and billy both create songs that leave people thinking..ambiguously. I can understand where everyone sees these meanings. These songs could mean anything to anyone. In my opinon, this girl means something to him. He has made mistakes, but no matter what happens in this relationship they have, he will love her dearly. 'I will not lose you' was used in many various ways in this song. He cares, even if she doesnt. He is trying to prove that he has done wrong, but will always be there for her.
I'm obsessed with this song. Really, really moving. Fucking amazing.
Billy's sounds, lyrics and ideas in general have always been much less cryptic than that of maynard's. In my opinion, there isn't much too interpret here. Just seems like a simple, fairly straightforward love song or love dilemma. Maybe its about someone who is ashamed about the things he has done, (perhaps cheating on his spouse) and his significant other is ready to walk out on him. but he will never give up on her and is pleading for her patience and forgiviness while he works on changing his ways-
"If I could separate me from myself, I'd stay away from me. If you decide I'm wrong, and you can wait that long, maybe it's not too late."
and...
"Don't pull away..."
Very catchy song, the extra layer of guitar in the final chorus gets to me every time...
I know where you are coming from FenderPrecision, but I think it is (and keep in mind I am loaning off my life at the mo' so it may be prejudiced a tad bit) about a guy who hates himself,

He is saying if he could leave himself he would do it in a jiffy, but he loves her, and she has said she does not hate him as much as he hates himself

The only mildly confusing part would be what has happened to make it too late, perhaps he is commiting suicide at the same time? Not sure about that...
dkyle_06 had a point there. ashleyynicholex3 : not every song of them can mean everything, still FenderPrecision wasn't right, because every song of them can have a quite different interpretation, this one as well.

I think it's more about desires, than deeds. The guy wants something, somebody else than he has. I think it's more about desires, than deeds. The guy wants something, somebody else than he has. I think the melting sky, the mad parade, the bloody jaws or the fire fall aren't just dangers to her beloved one, but symbols of the subjects of his desires. The melting sky can be the symbol of his worthless ambitions, the mad parade can be the symbol of his false temptations from the outside, the bloody jaws can be the symbol of life which makes us used and hurt and the fire fall can be the symbol of the destroying and careless aspect of his thinking. He knows that these are the wrong things in the world, so he wants to protect her from these traps. Doesn't matter that the girl is part of this "evil" world as well, because he doesn't want to know it right now, he just wants the pure happiness. He pushes out other thoughts from his mind - "Don't pull away..." Finally he wants to create a true alliance with her against the outside. (Which is the basic reason of the idea of family.) In my opinion he wouldn't doubt himself if she had been the One.
