Walk Between Raindrops Lyrics
A shadow crossed the blue Miami sky
As we hit the causeway by the big hotel
We fought
Now I can't remember why
After all the words were said and tears were gone
We vowed we'd never say goodbye
When we kissed we could hear the sound of thunder
As we watched the regulars rush the big hotels
We kissed again as the showers swept the Florida shore
You opened your umbrella
But we walked between the raindrops back to your door
In my dreams I can hear the sound of thunder
I can see the causeway by the big hotels
That happy day we'll find each other on that Florida shore
You'll open your umbrella
And we'll walk between the raindrops back to your door...
As we hit the causeway by the big hotel
We fought
Now I can't remember why
After all the words were said and tears were gone
We vowed we'd never say goodbye
As we watched the regulars rush the big hotels
We kissed again as the showers swept the Florida shore
You opened your umbrella
But we walked between the raindrops back to your door
I can see the causeway by the big hotels
That happy day we'll find each other on that Florida shore
You'll open your umbrella
And we'll walk between the raindrops back to your door...

I feel like the song is referring to the Cuban influx to Florida between the 50s-70s. "A shadow Crossed the Blue Miami Sky"--Possibly referring to the news of the coming immigrants. "The showers swept the Florida Shore"--The Immigrants arriving. The fact that the protagonist and his girlfriend fought could be their political ideology differences (One of them supports the migration, one doesn't.) "We watched the regulars rush the big hotels"-- Could mean the Floridians that are scared by the sudden swarm of new people. "The sound of thunder" could be the commotion caused by the event.
@savino76 Nah. The Cubs started coming in en mass in 1980. Obviously the album is a concept album of 1957-1963ish. The black shadow is simply the cloud that create the raindrops in the title.

This song is so incredibly sad, powered up by the insanely happy music in the background... In other words: Fagen in a nutshell.
That happy day we'll find each other on that Florida shore... you'll open your umbrella, and we'll walk between the raindrops back to your door...

What ever do you mean sad? If it's about a simple break up, I'm gonna become a christian. If it's about a nuclear fallout, I will exalt thee to the highest.

I get the sad vibe too, despite the delightfully swinging, bouncy music. There is a profound undercurrent of nostalgia running through this song's dialogue.
"That happy day, we'll find each other on that Florida shore." Well, I sincerely hope so.
Honestly, Fagen's solo lyrics have never plumbed the same depths as Steely Dan's. But his albums are every bit as musically complex. Just check out the very rapid jazz chord changes that happen thru the two-and-a-half-odd minutes of this absolutely brilliant piece. Larry Carlton is the hidden master of this record.
There really isn't a bad moment on this entire album. Like someone said on another song, bury me with this CD. It surely won't gather dust. Certainly it's one of my top ten desert island discs.
Ohhhhhhhhh MIAMI!
Love the immigrant interpretation, but I find it intriguing as a "love" song.\n\n"We fought" - very concise! No blame, either. Love it. Next line, we don\'t know who had the tears - both? One of them?\n\nThen, the clincher: "walked between the raindrops back to your door". Not our door... How is it they were in separate rooms? Is this a 1950s thing? Or, perhaps they knew each other but not well enough? And then, does he go in that door? Presumably, otherwise he\'d be in the rain without an umbrella.\n\nSo much unsaid; so much to the imagination. Love it!\n\nAnd, like Starquest: "Ohhhhhhhhh MIAMI!"
@mumajor Separate rooms because they met at this resort?

In the third verse, I think it's actually "farther shore"--a reference to the afterlife. He's remembering a day with his now-deceased love, looking forward to the day he dies and they are reunited.
I think it’s a straightforward nostalgic love song, to be interpreted as is. I always liked this song and had no idea it was Donald Fagen till I bought Nightfly. Been a fan of the Dan for years and this album, while different, is amazingly good.

Two singles go to one of those new resorts in swinging Miami for vacation and meet. First verse opens with them having an argument on the way to the beach through the causeway, it was over something silly (underlying reason, sex?) and soon forgot all about it. But they'll always remember where they met on that Florida beach and walk between the raindrops back to her room.
