Men of Snow Lyrics
Once I made a man all out of snow
He had the darkest eyes and a button nose
I told him all my sadness and my fear
And he just listened with a snowy ear
But when I came around the next day
My friend had gone and melted all away
I saw his eyes lying on the ground
I made a sound that was something like crying
Oh, one day you will go away from this
Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt one day
And winters come, and my love, the winters go
And time stacks up in piles like winter snow
And everything you love and hold so dear
Won't really matter when we disappear
Oh, one day you will go away from this
Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt one day
Oh, one day you will go away from this
Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt, you know, we're men of snow.
We melt one day
He had the darkest eyes and a button nose
I told him all my sadness and my fear
And he just listened with a snowy ear
My friend had gone and melted all away
I saw his eyes lying on the ground
I made a sound that was something like crying
Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt one day
And time stacks up in piles like winter snow
And everything you love and hold so dear
Won't really matter when we disappear
Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt one day
Oh, one day you will go away from this
Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt, you know, we're men of snow.

Just because she acknowledges that the things you loved when you lived won't matter when you're gone doesn't make this song pessimistic. It's an acceptance of not only her death but also the smallness of her own life in the scheme of the things, so it's an acceptance of life too.
I think you guys are right, this is about her saying that life is short and that whatever we do in it, we'll all melt, one day. It's a sort of reminder to live life to the fullest.
However, despite the lyrics, I also feel it is a hopeful song from the way she sings it. "Oh, one day you will go away from this / Oh, one day you will know we're men of snow, we melt one day" sounds very hopeful and encouraging, like one day, things will be better, you'll get through whatever sadness you're feeling.
beautiful analogy of human life..
captivating and addictive, a really good song..
I love how she tackles death and the realization of death, with the analogy of snow/snowmen.
My favorite Ingrid song by life.
Life is too short.
In my opinion, this song touches on a subject that I have not yet seen: idolatry. In this song, the girl manifests a spirit from something inanimate, and the tells it all of her uncertainties and fears, which is what we, as people, generally confide in God or a higher power. As a person, she is in search of meaning in the world, and this is difficult to find, especially when she is surrounded by all of the same, flimsy "men of snow" that she is. The realization in this song is not that life is short, but it is that we cannot treat people as if they were more than people, because as time goes by we will "melt all away".
I love this song! I had it on my myspace profile for a while but then the artist deleted it. It's not on Itunes either, so I just watch the live performances on youtube. It's actually a very depressing song about how you can live, love and laugh, but in the end, everyone dies and it never really mattered. It's obviously a pessmistic view. BEAUTIFUL THOUGH!!!
i think in this song, she's saying that sometimes, people can be there just when you need them, and they'll lend you a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, etc., but they can go as easily as they came. i think she then realizes in the chorus that everyone is kind of like that, like a man of snow, and eventually, we'll melt, or die, one day.
