In McDonalds Lyrics
[Woman]
'Cause at once upon a time, it was you I adored.
I could smile...
'Cause at once upon a time, it was you I adored.
[Man]
You look different.
'Cause at once upon a time, it was you I adored.
I could smile...
'Cause at once upon a time, it was you I adored.
You look different.

I remember reading an interview with Burial where he mentions he spends many of his nights/early mornings sitting in a 24 hour McDonalds by himself, not answering his cellphone...
I agree with TimothyReal and just for clarification, the woman in this song is Aaliyah. The line is sampled from her song "I Refuse." Got goosebumps when I heard her voice out of nowhere.
Beautiful song. That's basically all I ever say on this website, haha. But I guess that's most of what I appreciate in music: Beauty. It's soooo present on this album.
any additional lyrics would be great, but you gotta have some kind of super hearing to make them out.
I always thought of it as: the woman singing meets an ex and his new girlfriend walking into mcdonald's while they're getting ready to walk out. She freezes and thinks back of all the times they had and how much she loved him, hence the "once upon a time it was you I adored" line. He notices her and says a casual, friendly hello. It's been a while since they've seen each other, hence the "you look different" line from the man.

He's obviously gotten over her, at least on a romantic level, but feelings resurface for the woman and she becomes sad. Maybe she still loves him. But I always thought of this song like that... to have sad feelings creep up on you out of nowhere in such a happy, busy and vibrant place like McDonald's, for example. The atmosphere around you is so bustling and cheery, yet you've never felt so alone.
Yeah, it's probably a silly interpretation for a song with hardly any lyrics, and probably wasn't the plot Burial was going for, haha, but that's how I see it. :P
thats really weird, cuz i imagined it in exactly the same way as that

Oh, please. Who y'all bullshitting. It's an insulting song. They are both sitting in a Mickey D's after not having seen each other for a very long time. The years have passed (perhaps) and they've grown older, larger, etc. She, like a typical woman, still sees his beauty (his insides) while he, like a typical man (yes, it's a stereotype, but a darn good one as stereotypes go) only notices that she's gotten larger and older. This is NOT a happy song about reminicising about the past, etc. Y'all need to give it a rest, please.
