Propane Nightmares

As some of you have mentioned before, yeah, this song is about the religious cult Heaven's Gate. The evidence is in the video, where you can see they have "Away Team" (Star Trek reference) bands. This religious cult commit mass suicide May 1997. The cult did in fact have a survivor just as in the video, who later on informed the media about his experience. They didn't die in a shack, though, they rented out a mansion before their suicide.

The beginning, "Something's tearing me down" and "I just wonder what we've gotten ourselves into" are the feelings of apprehension and anxiety the survivor feels before he's about to take his own life. While I don't get the fire references, the "I'll burn before you bury me" symbolizes the cult's beliefs that the earth will renew itself by rejuvenating after an apocalypse, and that to avoid this, the cult must evacuate Earth the only way possible: by leaving their bodies to join other extraterrestrial beings through suicide. Their times of death were around the time when the Hale-Bopp comet passed Earth in 1997, since their cult leader Marshall Applewhite believed that escaping the world then would allow them to climb aboard the spaceship he claimed was following the comet. "Mind is willing/Soul remains" shows yet again the survivor's tension, as his religious beliefs wanted him to suicide, but his gut/body/soul doesn't think it's such a good idea.

The rest, I'm not really sure of. "Flesh too weak to jump yourself" could also relate to the cult's belief that their bodies were just weak vessel that were caught in this terrible world, and that their suicide could turn them into transhuman "Next Level" beings. I don't really know why this song's called "Propane Nightmares," but my guess is that it has something to do with Robert Leon Nichols, formerly in the band Grateful Dead, who also committed suicide in the same manner, only this time he used propane to kill himself rather than phenobarbital. It's just a guess, but the propane would explain all the fire references.

Does anyone else think of "Inspector Gadget" when listening to the repeating electro part? Example, right after the words "set your sights for the sun". I wanna dance to it all weird everytime. :)

Not sure about the lyrics, but I definitely know the music vid is based on the UFO-like suicide cult of 'Heaven's Gate'. This was a small suicide cult ending over 10 years ago that believed the earth was about to be 'recycled' or in other words, completely wiped and started again. And the only way to escape this is to leave their earthly bodies behind and join with a spacecraft to a paradise 'beyond human level'.

They believed that the spacecraft was behind a comet flying around in the solar system, and thus around 39 members killed themselves when the comet was at its closest to the earth so they can go to the 'next level' of being a humanless, genderless soul.

This cult links to the video because of the similarities between the suicides. Heaven's Gate members before killing themselves cleansed themselves of impurities by drinking citric juices, similar to what happens in the video, where on the table there are glasses, lemons, etc.

Most importantly though when the two members are running away, a dark shadow is cast the area and they see ghost like figures raising from the building which fly into the sky. This is suggesting they have completed the suicide and they are flying to the spacecraft where they are being taken to the next level as genderless souls.

When they are running away and are met by those thugs, it looks like he starts to regret his decision of not leaving this planet.

Being called 'Heaven's Gate' probably suggests they had some form of Christian beliefs, hence the church building and clothing. Add in some dramatic bits, and you have a music video :) Hope you enjoyed reading.

Pretty sure the lyrics are "Raise the anchor, bring it on home" not "Praise the anger". It makes sense in the context of the song.

The other part "Flesh too weak to something something" is unclear to me, but I am fairly certain nobody in this thread got it right. It's definitely not "jump yourself", I looked at the waveform in Ableton and I can confidently say that's NOT it. I really wish I could just ask Rob.

i think this is a brilliant song, i couldnt make a good assumption on the subject of the lyrics at all, but i think the song is incredible, the video is very good aswell

Barely getting into Pendulum atm, and this is most definitely my favorite song I've heard so far.

Almost sounds like someone is trying to save a woman from a bad lifestyle situation. Not entirely sure though.

And is it just me, or does the intro remind anyone else of Danger Mouse? Anyone? Just me?

yeah i'm going to go with hurrellmaster on that one. figures. i was really depressed because my girl was making some bad decisions around the time i first heard this song. it kinda touched me. yeah i think that is whats going on. that or a romeo and juliet sort of thing, you know, shes bad for him, but hes in love.
