Break the Sky

"won't be haunted by dreams i've deferred" -i think it kinda refers to the langston hughes poem 'raisin in the sun' where he asked the question "what happens to a dream deferred?" -shes just saying that she won't let what she wanted the relationship to be constantly be a reminder of how the relationship really went and will not allow the memory of it to constantly nag at her

This song is about an independent girl who wants to break away from who she is with because they are going nowhere, and she is not experiencing all the things she could by staying in the relationship. The lines “Weight of days lost holding you down” and “Won’t be haunted by dreams I’ve deferred” show that she has been missing out, and wants to live the dreams that she has been putting on hold. She realises she doesn’t need anyone else to do all the things she can do by herself, and because the person who she is with is not the right person for her, she wants to break away and live independent of them.

“Kiss goodbye a dozen times before we get there” shows that she is in love with this person, so breaking away is slightly more difficult. Along with this is the line “Fear will hold you back, if you believe in that”, meaning the fear of detaching yourself and going it alone will prevent others from breaking away, but she herself will break away because she doesn’t believe in fear holding her back. You’ll have to look for her, but she won’t be found — she’s gone to break the sky herself!

it kind of sounds like love and everything was perfect, but then her lover was leaving and she was trying to persuade him not to, and when he did she was trying to talk herself up saying she didnt need him when she did

I think it's about a girl who's been with a guy more for comfort, rather than actually being really interested in him. So, she's going to break up with him because she doesn't know why she needs a guy when she is perfectly fine on her own, and the only thing that will stop her from ending the relationship with him is the fear of being alone.

i love it when she sings 'Why do I need anyone else When I can break the sky myself?' the jazzy change just makes it stand out. whats with the end of the world implications?

"Before the world dies at my door.."

• This definitely shows that the girl in the song is treated 'badly' by a guy, but not bad as in abusive, just bad as in he doesn't treat her like he should. He thinks that she'll always be there for him to go back to, and this line is saying how the girl knows that when he comes back to her, every time, that everything is gonna get screwed up.

"I'll break the sky for you and I are going nowhere"

• I think that this means that she's trying to move on, because they're 'going nowhere,' and she's gonna prove to him that she can do anything she wants, such as 'break the sky,' possibly to prove him wrong.

"Kiss goodbye a dozen times before we get there."

• I personally think that this kinda shows her weakness for him, and that she keeps going back to him. Whoever him is. haha.

"Why do I need anyone else, when I can break the sky myself?"

• I think that at first, she's kind of saying, why do I need anyone else besides him, but then she realizes that she only needs herself to be successful and happy, not someone who's probably dragging her down.

"Won't be haunted by dreams I've deferred, won't set my heart frozen in amber"

• I honestly have no clue.. haha, sorry!

"The love you always seem to find is syrupy sweet,"

• This, to me, definitely says that he tries to find other people to like, but it's always very fake.

"One taste and you've made up your mind, too ripe to eat."

• The boy doesn't wanna be with the 'syrupy sweet' girl, he wants to go back to the girl who's singing. It seems like he does this a lot.

"Fear will hold you back, if you believe in that."

• Simple. She fears being alone and unhappy, but the second line is saying that she'll only be like that if she believes it's true.

Of course, this is just my take on it, haha. I tend to relate lyrics to my life, so. :P But I definitely love their new CD, this is one of my favorite songs. they're all so catchy!

The 'fear will hold you back' part somehow reminds me of the Foo Fighters song 'Pretender'. Kind of similar melody, although it could just be me being tone-deaf...
