Hurricane Lyrics
instead of the divorce/son view which works, i see it more as an old relationship. She was with this amazing guy, the finest thing she's done, but it ended badly forming the hurricane and neverending hurt or the dust that won't settle. Soon he wants her back but he came too late after she'd moved seven cities away and she's moved on to someone else whos in her bed now. She needs someone reliable. she could try to take to time try their old relationship again but what happened can't be overlooked and there's no settling of the dust.
ya this is like an elaboration of what altmusic said. lolll pretty song.
I think it's about a really intense relationship that just ended, and I mean intense in a negative way. It sounds to me like a lot went wrong in the relationship, but sort of in a way she still appreciates a lot of what happened. I think it's one of those things where you look back and can't help but wince at the thought of most of what happened, but there are still those memories that remind you of why you stayed as long as you did. I think, for her though, there was a lot of damage done. She's describing the rubble of a house destroyed by a storm, which I'd say represents this destructive guy and this destruction that's been done to her emotionally. Even though she has a new love ("he's asleep in my bed") it's hard not to think of everything that happened. That doesn't have to mean she still loves the guy, it's just hard to forget. And even though waiting for her regrets and her pain to die down and sink in sounds like the best thing to do, it doesn't feel like that will ever happen ("I could wait around for the dust to still, but I don't believe that it ever will")
I'm probably only interpreting it this way because that sounds a lot like my own ex, but I am trying to work with the lyrics as far as what she specifically is feeling. We'd differ in the respect that I think she was abused, just by the way some of her songs sound...
But either way, it's a gorgeous song
First Verse -He came back for her after she had already gotten over him. The damage is not that they had broke up, that he had come back.
Second Verse -The steady murmur is her conscience telling her that she can't be with the guy in her doorway, she has found somebody else now.
Chorus -well you think its kind of obvious, the hurricane (her lover) came back for her and she realizes that she can never escape it, even when its over she'll always remember have him in her heart (the dust won't settle)
Third verse -Upon realizing that her love won't go away she won't follow her heart. She'll lean on what matters that their relationship hadn't worked before and she realizes that it probably won't ever. But if he doesn't go away at first she realizes that she won't be leaning on that for long
Fourth verse -She tells him that he "came back too slow" meaning she already got over him but not really. etc.
Most of this song is easy to interpret. I liked the kid idea though but it would be kind of weird if her child was sleeping in her bed...yeah.
Love this song, such an interesting sound to it. New album is shaping up nicely. Definitely going to pick up the CD when it hits stores.
Edited by delial on March 18 2008, at 01:08AM

Another correction:
"Sent out the mourning birds To sing of the damage Now that the calm's returned I know I can't manage
You're standing in my doorway Though he's asleep in my bed The steady murmur Always in my head"
Also, a couple slight word changes in the chorus:
"You're the finest thing that I've done The hurricane I'll never outrun I could wait around for the dust to still But I don't believe that it ever will."
It sounds a bit like a mother talking to her son after "the hurricane" her divorce.
I agree that it is a mothr talking to her son but after her has been born. Its a beautiful song. I think shes telling him that he is the best thing that has ever happened to her.
Sent out the morning birds To sing of the damage Now that the calm's returned I know I can't manage After she comes home with him she realises that she is scared of being a mother and doesnt think she can do it on her own.
You're standing in my doorway Though he's asleep in my bed The steady murmur Always in my head The you is the father and the he is the son. It seems like they are the same person in the song but I think its because they are alike.
You're the finest thing that I've done The hurricane I'll never outrun I could wait around for the dust to still But I don't believe that it ever will Telling her son that he is the best thing that she has ever done or that has ever happened to her.
You're standing in my doorway Seven cities ago The days are racing But you come back too slow Recalling the last time she saw the father or the first time she met him.
It is my favourite song from the new album and might become my all time favourite. It is amazing! Hurricane is the new lighthouse...
Thats a cool outlook, I agree this song is the new Lighthouse. I personally think that its about love, like she was in love and maybe it didn't work, but its all she thinks about or she can't escape the fact that she still has feelings for him.
You're the finest thing that I've done The hurricane I'll never outrun I could wait around for the dust to still But I don't believe that it ever will
And she doesnt see herself getting over it.
The romance theory seems slightly more plausible, considering that this album's lyrics is focused more on their experiences than those around them.
Beautiful song. One of their very best.
Pretty straightforward... I absolutely love the non-cliche use of metaphor here.... the line "hurricane I'll never outrun" could be used so immaturely and obnoxiously, but since it's so well fleshed-out it comepletely works. This whole song is just so good... that diminished vii in the chorus absolutely kills me. I think this is one of the best songs I've ever heard.
