Red, Yellow, & Blue

I think this is probably inspired by kurt vonnegut.

In slaughterhouse-five an american turned german nazi explains to american soldiers his armband.. a red armband with a blue swastika in a white circle.

"'Blue is for the American sky,' -'White is for the Race that pioneered the continent, drained the swamps and cleared the forests and built the roads and bridges. Red is for the blood of American patriots which was shed so gladly in years gone by.'"

since the band is clearly a fan of vonnegut, i think this connection is pretty plausible

The Vonnegut connection is good. However, it's worth noting that the colors of Arizona's flag are red, yellow, and blue, and the album (which shares the name) has a cowboy on the front. Perhaps it was an ode to Arizona using a Vonnegut allusion?

The Kurt Vonnegut thought is a very good one, but I think the explanation is more direct. This is the opening song on their first full-length album. That makes this their primer, their statement of intent. So I think Luke used this song to explain the band and what to expect from them. Their music is as simple as you'll get in a standard rock n' roll format- 3 members playing the basic instruments: drums, bass, and guitar/vocals. So they chose 3 colors- the 3 primary colors. The 3 basic colors that reflect their minimalistic sound. If I started my own country, what colors would I use? A myriad to choose from and just choosing red, yellow, and blue? Luke's saying that there's ten thousand bands out there with a huge array of sounds, but in his music- his country- it will be simple and direct, but from it any color can be mixed, i.e. nuances will inevitably emerge.

Good opening song on the album. :D

The first time i listened to the album, i didnt think much of this as an opener. But now i love it, the lyrics are so simple but fantastic. it makes you wonder how noone thought of it before, like the lyrical version of the toaster.
