One Day Like This Lyrics
Drinking in the morning sun
Blinking in the morning sun
Shaking off the heavy one
Heavy like a loaded gun
What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
Someone tell me how I feel
It's silly wrong but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like the final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight
Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with me half awake
Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
When my face is chamois-creased
If you think I'll wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin
Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see you like
Yeah, lying with me half awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
Throw those curtains wide!
One day like this a year'd you see me right
Throw those curtains wide!
One day like this a year'd we'll sing it right
Blinking in the morning sun
Shaking off the heavy one
Heavy like a loaded gun
Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
It's silly wrong but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like the final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with me half awake
Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
If you think I'll wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin
And only now I see you like
Yeah, lying with me half awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day
One day like this a year'd you see me right
Throw those curtains wide!
One day like this a year'd we'll sing it right

In an interview with Mark Radcliffe, published in Reelin' in the Years: The Soundtrack of a Northern Life, Garvie revealed that he wrote it the day he woke up to a beautiful morning "after being with someone and waking up with them for the first time". In that interview, and also in one he did with Tim De Lisle for The Economist 1843 magazine, he revealed that he had the line "one day like this a year'd see me right" noted in his diary since his teens as something that would make a great song. He made three or four attempts at writing about his feelings about waking up that morning, and included that line from his teenage diary, as he felt this was the moment to use it.
When they played played it back for the first time, they felt the chorus, with the strings, was close to Hey Jude,; Garvie agreed, and said it was also like Loaded by Primal Scream. They then all felt it was right to do it because they all liked Hey Jude and Loaded. Garvie said he felt it was the "generous" thing to do, to give those associations to the listener.
Unreal song, sums up the feeling of falling in love, it's like looking at someone for the first time when the penny drops (Cause holy cow, I love your eyes And only now I see the light). Totally agree with everyone else, a real feel good factor song.
This song makes me cry but in a happy sense.
I met my soulmate a month ago and was listening to Seldom Seen Kid on rotation.
One Day Like This has become "our song" and I quite often find myself singing it without realising how loud I'm singing.
Looking forward to taking her to see Elbow on Thursday - last night of the tour at Manchester Apollo, I know for sure that they will be amazing as usual...
I just created an account here to tell you that your comment made me really happy and to say good luck to you :)

almost a year gone, but feel in a similar way: i love this song, i really do, but i think it is a sad one, although i think it's not if you listen to the lyrics. But it always makes me sad a little, or do i just listen to it when i'm a little sad? sorry for babbling :)

Agree with all the stuff above, just been looking at the comments against 'Starlings' an equally enthralling track. There is a similarity in the reference to remaining in love when growing old;
'Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin'
As I approach 50 I can identify with that... Pure poetry in song
Our lips go thin when we smile. He's saying he's smiling all the time, even when he should be kissing.

I see this in the concept of love for my children. Both my son and daughter are born with this song in the background (CD was alowed in the delivery room :) ) They're 3,5 and 2 now, and still when I here this song, I cry of happiness. I'm soft when it comes to this subject and the violins don't make it easier. "I can only think it must be love": I thought I knew what love was, until my children were born. That was a whole new level of love. "Cause holy cow, I love your eyes": my daughter has the bluest eyes. "Lying with me half awake": at night when they woke up and had to be soothed, I was half awake, so were they. "Throw those curtains wide!" Because their life begun, and so did mine.
Does anyone know what this song is about yet?.I'm wondering if it relates to an interview I read where Guy said he had purposefully sabotaged a relationship to provide him with new material? "What made me behave that way?Using words I never say................cause holy cow I love your eyes and only now I see the light..."if he did that to me I certainly wouldn't hold it against him!......GORGEOUS SONG!!!!!!!
well I think this song is about the feeling that you have when you are falling for someone, like when you are falling in love. when you feel all alive and like you could hug the entire world
"Someone tell me how I feel It's silly wrong but vivid right"
I guess that line shows the best what I mean
beautiful song anyway
This is a beautiful song. Real feel-good factor.
yeah the version of Glastonbury was great. Count the violinists!

Think it's about waking up with someone who you've realised you love. He hadn't realised it before, but this recognition has dawned on him as he woke up with the literal dawn. I agree with screenager as well. Like the love means he's ready for anything, let the day in because whatever challenges it brings, he can overcome them.
I think, in addition to what's been mentioned above, this song is about not expecting or wanting much from life - just a "perfect" day once in a while....
