Shine Lyrics

I have travelled past your window many times.
I find your face too hard to define.
I can touch you hollow thing.
You plague my mind.
I can never go outside.
I will never go back to being blind.

I have wondered what you're doing everyday since last I asked.
Are your cheeks hollow?
I don't like your eyes dark.

I need shine, I need shine, I need shine.
Step away from my light, I need shine.

I am honest now, not a shouter
I am reformed, reborn, and forgiven.
And you've been busy,
But you've missed me.
And I've plagued your mind.
You can never go outside.
You will never go back to being blind.

I need shine, I need shine, I need shine.
Step away from my light, I need shine.

I need shine, I need shine, I need shine.
Step away from my light, I need shine.

The first two lines of this song are so beautiful. Well, the whole thing is amazing, but I love that line "I find your face too hard to define."

Laura said in her interview with WNYC that "Shine" kind of represents the need to be around positive, healthy people and it was a word she used to explain that abstract concept.

This is probably very odd (and wrong) iterpretation, but this song always remainds me of Brokeback Moutain. The guitar melody at the beginning and later in the middle of the song sounds like it could be written for the soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla and the lyrics, especially: "You plagued my mind,I can never go outside, I will never go back to being blind (go back to live in denial, pretend to love a woman), really fit too. "I need shine, step away from my light" - because they are scared of this love, don't want it to be so strong and it could be easier for them to just be straight. Even the part: "I am honest, no, not a shouter, I am reformed, reborn and forgiven." kinda fit Brokeback Mountain Spoilers! -> - because Jack eventually came out out, started to live with other man and the forgiven part could be about his parents or wife. "And you've been busy but you've missed me, I plagued your mind..." - Ennis didn't have time for Jack, because of his work and his daughters, but he still missed him.

That's a beautiful interpretation...even if it's not what she had in mind at the time when she wrote it, the song is very evocative of many times like those, where love is a strain and a pressure, a river flowing against us. Brokeback Mountain reduced me to tears, beautiful film.

'you plague my mind' is the best line in the song, it sums up love really. its maybe about being depressed and everything being black and being 'blind' in the sense that you cant see whats right in front of you.

for me, i think this song preaches how love is so very overpowering and takes over your mind and all thoughts. Marling, talking about "shine" and "light" represents how the over whelming emotion is too great and perhaps needs space but cant fight the emotion.

i think at the start, she's falling for him and she can't live without him, and then it turns the other way round, and he can't live without HER. beautiful song.

I think this song explores how sometimes you need the pain to see things clear.

Sometimes when you're in love with someone and it's not right or unrequited, you don't see things clearly (ie., blind). You feel it's right, but it's not (ie., plagues your mind).

But as soon as they're out of the way... you can shine.

I think it's about a being in a relationship with a depressed man.

Given the preceding songs it's more likely bipolar--"My Manic and I" talks about the manic side of a manic-depressive (which today is called bipolar disorder).

It's about the terror of that uncomfortable shift from "just a love" to "THE love". She obsesses about the the guy."I have have traveled past your window many times." She says it again, "I have wondered what you're doing every day since last I asked."

"I can touch you, while laughing." There is no better exclamation of an introvert's love than this.

When an introvert falls in love like, this, it can feel like the first day they step outside into the open air. Love feels like seeing the sun for the first time, wholly and incapable of describing it.

"I/You will never go back to being blind" This is not something easily forgotten, you can't forget it, no matter how hard you might try. You can't undo the past, even though many other people do, skipping over their losses in favor of their successes.

She is singing a song about true love, a love in a world in which so many things are so easily forgotten. But once you see it, you can't unsee it. And then the rest of your life becomes a journey towards that shine, that wonder that is free from the cares and sins of your previous life,

'I need shine, I need shine, I need Shine.'

She is singing about the nature of True Love.
