First Impressions Lyrics

I’ve gotten used to being introduced.
“Hello. What’s your name? How are you?”
They see my smile, my laugh, and the hurt behind my eyes.
Loss is not so easily disguised.

I’ll try my best to keep on with my sunny disposition.
But I close my eyes and end up reminiscing.

So save me from waking up tonight.
Save me from waking up tonight.
Cause I toss and I turn and it doesn’t feel right.
Save me from waking up tonight.

Left to my own devices,
I’d stay up till 3 am.
Spend the whole day barely awake,
And then do it all again.

Cause my dreams are filled with pleasantries
That make me think you’re here with me.
They won’t let my poor heart mend.

I have tried my darnedest to continue smiling wide,
But I miss you and that’s something I can’t hide.

So save me from waking up tonight.
Please, save me from waking up tonight.
I thought I was fine, but it looks as if I might,
Not make it through the night.

So save me from waking up tonight.
Please, save me from waking up tonight.
Cause I toss and I turn and it doesn’t feel right.
Please, save me from waking up tonight.

You can also relate this song to someone who is really close to you that has just passed away because "loss is not so easily disguised"

and the only thing you can do when someone passes away is "close my eyes and end up reminiscing"

I'm sure a load of people have dreams of their loved ones and when something happens they don't want to wake up because their dreams are "filled with pleasantries" and it make you think they're here with you and what not.. which doesn't really let your heart mend.

and you'll always be trying your darndest to continue smiling wide but you'll miss them and it wont be something you can hide...

which is why you want them to save you from waking up tonite

my favorite part of this song is "my dreams are filled with pleasantries, that make me think you're here with me. they won't let my poor heart mend."

i think anyone who's sad over someone has had that feeling, where you feel okay for a bit and then dream of that person. it's terrible.

University sucks is what this song means to me.

The first verse is about getting used to people seeing through her smile. More than likely it's about being dragged out by friends to meet new people and stay active, stop moping. She's gotten used to this and also probably used to seeing it register on the person she's just met's face that something is making her unhappy.

She's going to try to keep up the happy facade, but when she's distracted for one moment and lets her mind wander, she goes straight back to remembering the one she's lost.

Now this may be a literal loss of a loved one or a loss in terms of a serious relationship. I'm inclined to believe it's the latter. Come on guys; it's Julia Nunes. She writes sad songs about boys breaking up with her.

The chorus seems to me like not being able to sleep because she's alone in the bed. I know all too well how much that sucks and how difficult that is. She doesn't want to wake up alone and it doesn't feel right.

Based on the second verse, she'd rather just stay sleep deprived than deal with the whole sleeping alone deal. She also doesn't want him to haunt her dreams.

Again, she's trying to put on a happy face but finds it impossible to pretend nothing's wrong.

"I thought I was fine, but it looks as if I might, Not make it through the night."

This part leads me to believe she finally tried to sleep but she knows she can't do it.

My Interpretation

this song is about Julia going to college, and missing her home and her family. so she dreams about them, but the dreams don't help her get over it.

I think what she means about having difficulty sleeping is the fact that when you're alone in your bed with your thoughts, there isn't anything to distract you or anywhere to hide. After losing someone you may be able to make it through a day fine, but once you're in bed thinking about everything, it all gets real, and all you can hear are your thoughts. I can relate Julia <3
