Shine Lyrics
Oh the night makes you a star
And it holds you cold in its arms
You’re the one to whom nobody verses I love you
Unless you say it first
So you lie there holding your breath
And its strange how soon you forget
That you’re like stars
They only show up when it’s dark
Cause they don’t know their worth
And I think you need to stop following misery’s lead
Shine away shine away shine away
Isn’t it time you got over how fragile you are
We’re all waiting
Waiting on your supernova
Cause that’s who you are
And you’ve only begun to shine
There are times when the poets and pornstars align and
You won’t know who to believe in
Well that’s a good time to be leavin’
And the past knocks on your door
And throws stones at your window at 4 in the morning
Well maybe he thinks it’s romantic
He’s crazy but you knew that before
And I think you need to stop following misery’s lead
Shine away Shine away Shine away
Isn’t it time you got over how fragile you are
We’re all waiting
Waiting on your supernova
Cause that’s who you are
And you’ve only begun to shine
Yeah you’ve only begun to shine
Won’t you shine shine shine shine over shadow
Shine shine shine shine over shadow
Shine shine shine shine over
And I think you need to stop following misery’s lead
Shine away Shine away Shine away
Isn’t it time you got over how fragile you are
We’re all waiting
Waiting on your supernova
Cause that’s who you are
And you’ve only begun to shine
Yeah you’ve only begun to shine
Yeah you’ve only begun to shine
Yeah you’ve only begun to shine
And it holds you cold in its arms
You’re the one to whom nobody verses I love you
Unless you say it first
So you lie there holding your breath
And its strange how soon you forget
That you’re like stars

Great song! The meaning is pretty straight forward but I love the way she words it.

"01.28.08 - A Note About "Shine" From Anna
"Shine" is a song FOR those people who have made mistakes in a public way, FOR people whose mistakes and heartbreak are considered entertainment. When sad things that would hurt ANYBODY happen, like your relationship falling apart and making entertainment news, or you are constantly being told how you aren't good, thin, pretty, or rich enough, or your job being so taxing for the roles you have to play whether it's having to immerse yourself in a crazy depressed state of mind to play a crazy depressed character, or having to stay permanently smiling every time you leave your house even though you've just had a miscarriage, or an argument with someone you love, or your dog died and you finally crack, we just say, "It was bound to happen, everyone in Hollywood is shallow and addicted."
"Shine" is also saying that little girls, like your daughters and sisters or you, don't have to throw up to be pretty, be sleazy to be loved, or be crazy to get attention. Just because the BAD things are what people pay money for doesn't mean that those things are ALL of what your favorite movie and music stars are. What about the fact that the heiress is an amazing business woman, and the popstar writes poetry, can really dance, or really sing?
EVERYONE deserves a chance. You don't have to settle for what others believe you to be. Force them to see you for what you are proud of. To be bigger than your title, stereotype, or clique, bigger than your loneliness and to know you are better than another's definition of you is to Shine. "
I LOVE this song! It is beautiful and true on so many levels - mostly i agree with the above posts my fave line is - "I think you need to stop following misery's lead, Shine away shine away shine away, isn't it time you got over how fragile you...and you've only begun to shine!" for me that says Be yourself, stop feeling down on yourself and feel free to be who you are - even in the darkest of situations, let your inner light shine away! so true. :-)
i think that Shine is about a girl stuck in a bad relationship or relationshit as i would like to call it lol but really its about a girl abd she loves him and always will but hes not good for her or what ever but its a crappy relationship and she leaves him an dhe comes back an dthey date and break up and date and brea up untill she is ready to leave him and shine over him
Personally, I feel as if this song is about someone who pretends to be a martyr but doesn't truly believe that that's who they are. Or someone who doesn't know or REFUSES to acknowledge that they are not worthless. The narrator is someone who is close to them/cares very much about them.... but can recognize these unhealthy behaviors and wants this person to calm down and come back to some semblance of rationality because by growing up and being productive that's how they can "shine".
Mostly I get this from the lines "You’re the one to whom nobody verses I love you/Unless you say it first" & "And I think you need to stop following misery’s lead/Shine away shine away shine away/Isn’t it time you got over how fragile you are".
Anyway, I'm admittedly probably biased because I'm in the process of ending a relationship with a guy who is so damaged but constantly pretends that he's not. He has so much potential.... but refuses to truly shine because he's such a "black sheep" and that's not what people like him does....
Still, no matter how off point my interpretation is.... it's another beautiful Anna Nalick song. :)
