Conjugal Burns Lyrics

The horseman you have brought deserve me.
Some how they've made it through the floor.
The clocks you set are they reversing.
Before this visit turns conjugal, ever more.
Maybe tonight.

So my half is waiting filed to a pulp.
Used insomnia's been cleansing with floods.
I got a pain inside that'll rip through the very fabric of time.
Cause I've been with you before.
God gave me sin.
I've got to get born.
Just so you know there's too many reasons.

You set the silver down to guard me from the weak.
You check the spelling for nothing.
You sent yourself the flood.

All of this time.
Bedsore containment.
Where am I now that the music has faded?

And I'm nowhere near the place.
You sent me here to breathe.
But I'm drawing closer to the present.
And I'll find a space with no memories.
I've got a second chance to inhabit the living.

If Goliath wont speak I'm blinded by heaven.
When will your eden come die?
If the liars that blink are bound by the sender.
Trinkets you gave have all rusted down.

All of this time.
Bedsore containment.
Where am I now that the music has faded?
You better steal this chance to give birth to more.
You'll wear those healing damns down to the plug.

"I got a pain inside that'll rip through the very fabric of time." when i first heard that line, i thought he said: "I got a penis that'll rip through the very fabric of time." and i thought, "well, it goes with conjugal, but cedric wouldn't just say 'penis,' he'd say something like phalice or throbbing stick or whatever." anyways, excellent closer to an album that could punch any spirit in the balls and then spit on them.

I was very disappointed when I looked up the lyrics because I (too, so I thought) have a penis that will rip through the very fabric of time, which scares me infinitely. I was hoping that he would know the solution that I (and possibly other people who suffer from this disease) struggle to find on a daily basis. I at least was hoping that more people would empathize after knowing that this is, in fact, a real disorder that sends people uncontrollably through timeshifts at no fault of their own.

=(

I also have the same problem. A support group has started up, the FoTP, or Fabric of Time Penis, meets weekly via webcam... we tend to dress like Omar or Cedric mostly, so... yeah.

Although the penis ripping through the very fabric of time would've made this song the "best song ever", I think it definitely stands on its own as the best song in Bedlam.

A Flash game called "Goliath the Soothsayer" was released with the album and can be found in: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/422645

Jeremy Robert Johnson also wrote about the story behind the album in his "Descent into Bedlam", it's probably the best resource about the Bedlam in Goliath http://www.jeremyrobertjohnson.com/TMVDIB.pdf

Finally, I wrote my own entry in RockGenius about the song based on some of the comments here (mainly Marinas' great explanation): http://rockgeni.us/2010/06/16/conjugal-burns-by-the-mars-volta/

My Interpretation

what is going on at the end of this song? like...is Cedric barking at the mic for some reason?

I don't know, probably. All I know is that that final distorted scream sounds fucking awesome.

Ending is messed up, like hell has broken loose or something. Maybe Goliath is eating TMV. Who knows.

The whole tone of the song seems to suggest that someone has finally realized something.I think it's that TMV, maybe Cedric in particular realized that Goliath is a dangerous waste of time and a drain on the band. As for the ending, I think its the sound of Goliath wishing not to be buried.

"The clocks you set are they reversing. Before this visit turns conjugal, ever more." Cedric is telling Goliath that he's going to get rid of it before the two of them end up "married" to each other. This is backed up by reports that Cedric buried Goliath somewhere in secret so it can't be found.

"And I'm nowhere near the place. You sent me here to breathe. But I'm drawing closer to the present. And I'll find a space with no memories. I've got a second chance to inhabit the living." This one is pretty literal. A space with no memories is the exact opposite of Goliath, which is a big collection of memories. The band has a second chance to inhabit the living, instead of constantly talking to the past.

"All of this time, bedsore containment. Where am I now that the music has faded?" Either Cedric falling out of love with Goliath (hence the conjugal burns), or Goliath admitting that its been using the band and now distraught because they've left it behind.

All I know is that this song sounds like it could've been a Deloused b-side, which is fine with me. 3:28 and onwards until the chorus is one of the most amazing things my ears have ever heard.
