Moorestown Lyrics

Her window looked out on North Church Street
An attic space overgrown
A photo-book of smiling friends
Road maps, New York, Los Angeles
Her walls are Mediterranean blue
Her baby sister picked the hue
Saltwater taffy, Jersey shore
Blue like the fingernails she wore

Her house is not far from the school
Her mom taught on the Hudson
Her dad's guitar sings open tunes
Reverberates up through the floor
Our love grew more one summer there
We'd spend our days just driving round
Old parking lots and neighborhoods
Are framed and charmed in Moorestown

I followed her across the Earth
Through parks in London, coasts of Perth
Newport, Kentucky and New Orleans
We shared a million lives it seems
I slept with her so many nights
We moved together heavenly
So close the North Pacific slept
You too were once beside me

She moved away to Williamsburg
Her eyes sad as a raven
My thoughts will pause, my throat will swell
When her name is spoken
And looking past the cold, long sea
I cannot bear to wonder now
If the cascading soft lights
Are glowing for us in Moorestown
Are glowing for us in Moorestown

He's singing about a girl, they traveled to different places. But then they broke up. He thinks of her when he hears her name and thinks back what they used to do (travel). Anyone agree? It's a very beautiful song nonetheless.

I'm curious - and this is one of my favorite SKM songs (along with Tonight In Bilbao and, well, most others!)... If he followed her across the Earth...Parks of London, Coasts of Perth, Newport, Kentucky, and New Orleans... why didn't he just go with her to Williamsburg? This song makes me cry, so heartfelt and sad with a haunting melody that is captivating...

This song is about a girlfriend from Moorestown, NJ. She actually came on stage and sang with him at a show in Philly this past summer (2008).

Agree with DubJ completely. It's a beautiful song, connecting her to this place, both of them special to him. It's Moorestown, New Jersey, for sure - North Church Street runs right through the town.

I love how this album seems to connect to these specific places, and so many people and memories associated with them. Such a great theme.

I just started listening to Sun Kil Moon, and I actually live in Moorestown, NJ. Awesome.

This is yet another song with the perspective of someone who is looking back on a past relationship and coming to grips with its loss. The final verse is one of Kozelek's most overwhelming. Both SKM albums focus on the theme of loss and its tendency to follow us long after we have moved on.

It's another one about his muse, Katy. She moved all over the world to hide from her love for him and his love for her. Most of his songs about someone are about her, she died in '03 from cancer.

Could he be singing about his daughter? The line about her father's guitar reverberating... it almost sounded like he could be singing about himself.

Mark Kozelek has always been a master. By the way, really awesome to see someone reply so quickly in here. Wow!

"I slept with her - so many nights... we moved together - heavenly..." Uh, that would be creepy at best, incestuous at worst...

I asked above why he didn't just go to Williamsburg with her if he followed her across the Earth. I wonder if their travels were adolescent fantasy - that they never really left Moorestown until she moved away?

Song Meaning

They broke up and his career was (and is) still based in San Francisco. It's about his former girlfriend Katy. She passed away, and he wrote this album about her. So there was really never a chance for that to happen.
