Do Something Lyrics
I've been walkin' through the fields
And on the streets of town
Trying to make sense of what you left me
Everything that I believed in
Has been turned upside down
And now it seems the whole wide world's gone crazy
But when I feel like giving up
And I'm ready to walk away
In the stillness, I can hear
A voice inside me say
Do something
Do something
It's too late for saving face
Don't just stand there takin' up space
Why don't you do something?
Do something
It's not over
No, it's never too late
You were always on my side
Love was all we had
Now I sit and watch our love unraveling
I pick up the morning paper
All the news is bad
How did we get on this road we're traveling?
But when I feel like giving up
And there's nowhere left to go
That's the time I dig down deep
The only thing I know
Do something
Do something
Don't leave it up for someone else
Don't feel sorry for yourself
Why don't you do something?
Do something
It's not over
No, it's never too late
Run away
You can't run away
For your honor
For your pride
You'll sleep better
Knowin' you tried
To do something
Do something
It's too easy not to care
You're not ready for the rockin' chair
Get up and do something
Do something
Don't wait too long
Even if it's wrong
You've got to do something
Do something
It's not over
No, it's never too late
And on the streets of town
Trying to make sense of what you left me
Everything that I believed in
Has been turned upside down
And now it seems the whole wide world's gone crazy
And I'm ready to walk away

Don Henley said in an interview that the "do something" part of this song is was inspired by how when he was growing up, if anyone felt depressed or bad or something, people would just tell them to "do something," and that that's enough to deal with problems instead of turning to all the support groups and therapy and all everything we have like that today.
To me this song is written from the perspective of a person who reflecting all of the bigger issues in the world today. S/he is becoming depressed because everything in the world is falling apart (the news is bad), but in reality we can’t control these things. There will always be evil in the world. The only way we can solve problems and be happy is to change the way we interpret these things, and find happiness from within. Stop complaining about problems and start fixing them.
