Eat dinner, Bury the Dog, and Run Lyrics

200 gallons ago, I buttoned up my jacket
I said goodnight to my supervisor, walked to my car, and unlocked it
The inside's so cold, at least the shit's still running
Picked up my cell phone; the roof of the car looks good for slugging

Walked in through my back door like a bull through bedsheets
There were flowers on the floor went from bull, to weak in the knees
Yeah, I'm a fuck-up. First day home.
Yeah, I'm fucked up and I'm calling you.

Put a camera in my car and you'd get me less and less and less.
I need a windshield built for war that can withstand my confidence
Today I reached into a shitter and saw the inmost part of me
My reflection has looked better, but never clean

Yeah, I'm a fuck-up. First day home.
Yeah, I'm fucked up and I'm calling you.

Nights like these won't be avoided.
Not by me.

such an epic song... reminds me of the aftermath of a stressful night at a blue collar job to me. The singer then seems contimplative on the way home, maybe considering if the job is worth the stress, maybe contemplating taking a different path. Just reminds me of my labor days getting off work at 11 pm with nothing to do but watch late night tv and think about my future. That may be way off from what the songs about but its perfectly relevant to me in that sense.

I agree Terrorhawk. Though I think it might be returning home from a semester at school rather than a late night at work. Long drive (200 miles long) back to his parents house.

I do wonder what the problem was when he got home though. Maybe quite literally a funeral for his dog? And what's up with the line "put a camera in my car, and you get me less and less and less." ?

I think that line has to do with the line about driving home. I think he's pretty much saying, if you could see what i do when i'm alone you'd get me even less. in this case he's using the example of the car. I see it as him kind of singing in the car like many of us do, with no inhibitions, thus the line, " i need a windsheild built for war, that can withstand my confidence." just my interpretation.

'Bury the dog' is slang for sex, so I reckon the title means "turn up, eat dinner, sleep with her and then leave right after", but I'm not sure what relevance this has to the lyrics of the song.

I think the "200 gallons ago" refers to the distance he's travelled the whole night: driving home from work, finding the flowers on the floor and going weak in the knees, and then maybe going to see someone after that.

I'm thinking maybe about a break-up? Like, he's been at work, got home and found "flowers on the floor", felt weak, admitted he's a fuck-up and is now calling someone...seems to me like his girlfriend has left him while he was out and now he's calling her. I dunno.

This reminds me when I worked at a job I hated. I worked 2nd shift and I'd get off anytime between 10:30-2:30 at night, go home and punch my doors out of anger, frustration, etc. They still have dents in them.

Don't know what the flowers on the floor mean, though.

I'm pretty sure the line "today I reached into a shitter and saw the inmost part of me" is a reference to Trainspotting.
