Lights Out for Darker Skies Lyrics

Oh lights out baby, for darker skies
There really is no reason that you need to ask why
When you fall like sparks from a muzzle

Like moths that get confused
By all the man-made moons
So go gentle in this dark, dark night

When something's wrong you know
It just ain't right

And you dance like sparks from a muzzle
And you fall like sparks from a muzzle

Welcome for the day or stay forever
There's things which we all need to navigate
Daisy chains of lights around the city now
They glow but never quite illuminate.

Hell and high water, won't stop us now
The future's twisted, righteousness is coming back around

Oh we fall like sparks from a muzzle

Unless two thousand and seven
Becomes a pitch black heaven
Oh stop acting like you’re my best friend

When you don’t know why and you don’t care how it ends
And you dance like sparks from a muzzle
And you fall like sparks from a muzzle

Welcome for the day or stay forever
There's things that we all need to navigate
Daisy chains of lights around the city now
They glow but never quite illuminate.

So dance like sparks from a muzzle
So dance like sparks from a muzzle

And we were lit by kerosene
And we were lit by acetylene
And we walked under neon skies
You know it made me wonder why
Why all the frequencies combine
And form a cleaner, brighter light
And we filled our florescent sails
It led to sodium-scarred wailing weeks

Hey now now, oh the future's bright
Oh hey now now, a history of light repeat now now
Because you know it’s right
Oh hey now now, a history of light repeat now now
Hey now now, oh the future’s bright
Oh hey now now, a history of light repeat now now
Hey now now, because you know it’s right
Oh hey now now a history of light
You know it's right
You know it's right
You know it's right
You know it's right
You know it's...

"So go gentle in this dark, dark night" I think it's a reference to Dylan Thomas's poem, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, written for his father.

I do think this song has an environmental message, but I read somewhere that it is a love song too. I love the apocalyptic references in this album. More accurately it's like a defiance of the doom and gloom of the apocalypse, and a sort of optimistic belief that the apocalypse won't happen if we don't want it to. And it starts in this song, with "Hell and high water, won't stop us now/The future's twisted, righteousness is coming back around".

Ahh, I've been on such a BSP binge lately, in anticipation of their Australian Expedition!

@assin I read in an interview that it started off as a song about light pollution, which it continues to be, but evolved into something broader too. I think someone mentioned here it is about skepticism of technology and the promise of scientific advancement. That feels right. Reminds me of the Bloc Party song "Pioneers" in that regard.

it seems to begin ith uncertainty with the modern world. The imagery is often negative: falling, gun muzzles, things not quite illuminated, future twisted and so on. I also suspect some of the lines refer directly to the band's experience recording in Canada. The latter half implies hope, though. A history of light (cleaner, brighter) versus the darkness and doubts. "You know it's right" is a defiant finish.

its criticising light pollution

Given BSP's predilection towards military history, I thought it was a reference to civilians being ordered to turn off all lights in a city in order to confuse enemy bombers.

That's a possibility. I also wondered if there was an anti racism element in there

"When all the frequencies combine, they form a clearer brighter light" I quite liked that. There is also some element of scepticism of technology "they never quite illuminate." It almost seems like two songs, the first being "lights out" the second being "A history of light"

@Jaesun Love that lyric: "Daisy chains of lights around the city now, they glow but never quite illuminate." Wonderful.

I think it may have some environmental meaning:

"Welcome for the day or stay forever There's things which we all need to navigate"

I think this relates to taking care of the earth longer-term (stay forever) rather than just through our lifetimes, and how every nation needs to work together to achieve this. Then the end of the song is optimistic (the future's bright).

whatever it means, and it seems to be to be deliberately cryptic (i quite liked the military idea but the mention of 2007 suggests its an environmental song), its a bitching choon

I'm pretty sure it is "sodium-scarred wailing WOUNDS." It's a great song. Initially, not one of my favorites from that album, but over time it has grown and grown on me. It's probably one of my four or five favorite BSP songs now.
