from the sky Lyrics

They kicked me out of the parade
I guess I had too much to say
Couldn't bend to fit myself inside the lines
And I have wasted all this time just trying
Those pretty boys and pretty girls
Live in their pretty plastic world
They're so convinced that everything is black and white
That we are wrong and they are right
They always told us not to fight
Kept us grounded when we should be flying

Don't be afraid to fall
You know the ground is never too far from the sky
And they can have their walls
The universe has bigger plans for you and I
So baby hold up your head, now
Don't ever let 'em see you cry

I know you're caught up in the show
And it's so hard to let it go
To lose the mask you always hid yourself behind
To live a life of your design
To say what's really on your mind
To come out of the dark and shine

Don't be afraid to fall
You know the ground is never too far from the sky
And they can have their walls
The universe has bigger plans for you and I
So baby hold up your head, now
Don't ever let 'em see you cry

If you could only see that
There is so much more to life than this
And everything you are is beautiful
And you are everything there is

Don't be afraid to fall
You know the ground is never too far from the sky
And they can have their walls
The universe has bigger plans for you and I
So baby hold up your head, now
Don't ever let 'em see you cry

It's about how this is a material world and how to really win it all, you may have to take some chances and loose.

To me this song is really obviously about coming out (as a homosexual), being kicked out of the parade is a reference to the St Patrick's Day parades where homosexuals were kicked out, "couldn't bend to fit myself inside the lines / and have wasted all this time just trying" - reference to attempting to lead a hetereosexual life, "They're so convinced that everything is black and white / That we are wrong and they are right" is a reference to the heteronormative society, and the entire verse

"To lose the mask you always hid yourself behind To live a life of your design To say what's really on your mind To come out of the dark and shine"

makes it even more obvious, if it needed to be. "everything you are is beautiful" just underlines the point. I know that some people will probably disagree with me here, but I can't see how this song could realistically be read in any other way when there are so many references!

It's about the conservative and liberal parties. Conservatives are so convinced that they are right and liberals are sick and wrong, but liberals know that conservatives are also hypocritical like conservatives claim liberals are. Liberals want to add color to the conservatives' black and white world, but they are knocked down by conservatives constantly.
