You wore a summer dress,
I wore my SundayÂ's best.
We were a pair, that night.
We dined like royalty,
Kissing beneath the tree.
We drank all the, bottles dry.

And then you said,
"Diamonds are girl's best friend."
I turned my head.
I bit my lip, and bit my lip again.

That night I closed my eyes,
Swimming through all my lies.
In my regret, I laid.
I turned to kiss your cheek,
Your body was grieving.
You opened your eyes and said,
"We need to talk..."
My story gets itÂ's wish tonight.

I feel all the blood rush away from my face.
When you say you can't do this,
I plead my case.
And I'm sorry for, running away.
I feel all the blood rush away from my face.
When you say you can't do this,
I plead my case.
And I'm sorry for, running away.

I need a drink, like a fish out of water.
My head is spinning, around.
I don't know what to do.
My pillows smell like you.
I see you in every mirror.

I feel all the blood rush away from my face.
When you say you can't do this,
I plead my case.
And I'm sorry for, running away.
I feel all the blood rush away from my face.
When you say you can't do this,
I plead my case.
And I'm sorry for, running away.

I need you, like fire needs oxygen.
I need you, like fire needs oxygen.
One last kiss, (like fire needs oxygen)
Before you go. (like fire needs oxygen)
One last kiss, before you go.

I feel all the blood rush away from my face.
When you say you can't do this,
I plead my case.
And I'm sorry for, running away.
I feel all the blood rush away from my face.
When you say you can't do this,
I plead my case.
And I'm sorry for, running away.

What about the fact that they were drunk! (We drank all the bottles dry)

She brings up marriage while she is drunk, he bites his lip in disbelief because he says he bites himself twice, to make sure he's not dreaming. later he tries to kiss her and she rejects him. and when she says "we need to talk" classic break up. the chorus is him getting dumped. she says "I can't do this." he pleas his case. (please stay or something. to convince her to stay.) and he apologizes for just running away because he can't take it.

When he says he sees her in every mirror, its like he sees her in himself. he can't look at himself without looking at her.

Some of the lines make me think it's about an engagement.

"You wore a summer dress, I wore my Sunday’s best. We were a pair, that night."

But the next line seems to imply that the girl wants to get married but the boy isn't ready.

"And then you said, "Diamonds are girl's best friend." I turned my head. I bit my lip, and bit my lip again."

I think it means they were on a romantic date when she began talking about marriage. He wasn't ready. Then I think since he wasn't ready for marriage, then she didn't want to be with him.

I love this song however. I'm glad I have the Still Searching Deluxe Edition.

    get it.

I agree with miki-kiwa about the engagement/ marriage thing b/c he says "I'm sorry for running away" But I also think it COULD mean that the girl is taking advantage of his fame and is after materialistic things, like diamonds. Because if he needed her "like fire needs oxygen" he's saying that he cannot exist without her. And if that's true, then why wouldn't he marry her?

um.. it sounds more like "my stomach turns and twists to knots" instead of "my story get's it's wish tonight" great song...buddy rules and senses kicks the living shit out of all other bands :D

I interprit this song completly differently. I think the song switches up between his point of view and her point of view. The frist stanza is obviously from his pov. but the second one is him popping the question to her and she tuns her had and bites her lip and starts thinking about alll the lies she's told him, like the rest of the cd is about her breakin up with him and all the times she had lied to him. And the when she tells him we need to talk. Then the rest of the song is how he feels when she breaks up with him and how bad he needs her and misses her!!!

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
Led Zeppelin
This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
