Horrorshow Lyrics
They're gonna come and get you
They're gonna come and find out
They're gonna come and get you
They're gonna come and find out
Colors dancing in the sky
All my ancestry up so high
And if I call, don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
'Cause they're gonna come and get you
They're gonna come and find out
Sleep my pretty sleep
Or the hotshots will break your heart
The mystical and horror show
You can see them floating
They don't know
Moving past the window
The shadows will break your heart
And horror show
You can see them floating
They don't know
Can not get a witness
Can not get a wtiness
The shadows will break your heart
They're gonna come and get you
They're gonna come and find out
Sleep my pretty, sleep
Or the hotshots will break your heart
Or the hotshots will break your heart
Or the hotshots will break your heart
They're gonna come and find out
They're gonna come and get you
They're gonna come and find out
All my ancestry up so high
And if I call, don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
They're gonna come and find out
Sleep my pretty sleep
Or the hotshots will break your heart
You can see them floating
They don't know
Moving past the window
The shadows will break your heart
You can see them floating
They don't know
Can not get a witness
Can not get a wtiness
The shadows will break your heart
They're gonna come and find out
Sleep my pretty, sleep
Or the hotshots will break your heart
Or the hotshots will break your heart
Or the hotshots will break your heart

It sounds more to me like she's saying, 'Can I get a witness, can I get a witness?' instead of the other, but. That's just me. Awesome song anyways.
I am not sure, maybe it is?

This song, I believe, morphed into I Saw a Light. There is this part in the end thats the same harp in I Saw a Light and I was like whoa! Lol I mean, cmon, the both give you that squishy feeling. Ya know? Because they seem like one of those songs that you hear that should be played right before someone dies in a scary movie lol. And uhm, where did you hear her demos, I wanna hear them :D
I believe there is a lot of pain in the loss of love, and perhaps this is exactly what both "Horrorshow" and "I Saw A Light" are about. But I think the important thing is that we all learn to know what it is that we have while we still have it, so that we may treat our selves better, and so that we may treat our loved ones better as well, and so that during a time of loss we may not feel regretful at all. the meaning of this song to me is of her & a lover or freind that are not supposed to be. The other person is more accepted than she is so if their relationship is found it would be the end.
"Colors dancing in the sky All my ancestry up so high"
Her colorful ancestry has been revealed or is well know & is everywhere. She is being talked about.
"And if I call, don't make a fuss Don't tell your friends about the two of us"
Her lover or friend is keeping her a secret & has scolded her for calling him.
"'Cause they're gonna come and get you They're gonna come and find out"
They suspect he is hiding something & they have been watching her aswell.
"Sleep my pretty sleep Or the hotshots will break your heart"
They will torment him for being with her. They are in her dorm room and he is resting.
"The mystical and horror show You can see them floating They don't know Moving past the window The shadows will break your heart"
His freinds are outside her window taunting her & he is in her room hiding & they don't know it. He can only see shadows moving about the walls coming from the window.
"And horror show You can see them floating They don't know Can not get a witness Can not get a wtiness The shadows will break your heart"
She is disgusted & frustrated about their relationship being kept secret but she wants to protect him from being rejected by freinds.

I believe you are absolutely correct. What a wonderful interpretation! I agree.

This song is definitely about the anti-semitism she faced while growing up in England and a lover hiding their relationship because she was half Pakistani.
amazing, really.
so amazing. i love the little child's prayer and the thunder in the background.
I do believe this was one of Bat For Lashes earliest songs, as it appeared on the 2004 demo along with the tracks 'Healing Fire' and 'Rosie'. What became of the others, I haven't a clue though part of me thinks that 'Rosie' morphed into 'Sarah' on the grounds of both of them being names and two syllables long. I've only got that hunch due to many musicians altering demos with new lyrics as well as new titles. I hope those other songs resurface sometime.
The new album is great, but this is my favorite BFL song of all time. BTW, for those of you lucky enough to hear this amazing song, here is the prayer that is read at the beginning of the song:
"Dear Lord, I give you may hands to do Your work; I give You my feet to go Your way; I give You my eyes to see as You see; I give You my tongue to speak Your words; I give You my mind that You may think in me; I give You my spirit that You may pray in me. Above all, I give You my heart that You may love in me - love the Father and love all humankind. I give You my whole self, Lord, that You may grow in me, so that it is You who lives, works and prays in me. Amen."
The full poem isn't read, but this is it, just in case anyone wanted to know.
Also, to those people who are lucky enough to have heard this song, you have a great taste in music! Be happy about that. And if you've never heard of Joanna Newsom, check out her songs "Emily" and "Monkey and Bear," and check out ILYA if you've never heard of them. Not the Euro ILYA, but the San Diego ILYA. Go to http://www.myspace.com/ilya and check them out. I could list a thousand other bands, but if you love this song, check these other bands out too. Indie music is the best. Fuck the record companies!
ah, thanks so much for the poem. i like Joanna!

I was wondering, are there any moderators who could please delete this comment? I made this comment years ago as EnjoyTheMelon but I cannot get back into my account. Those two other artists are great, but I would just like for this to be deleted. Thank you, if possible.

I believe those of you who think this is a family issue are 100% correct. I just realized I never even interpreted this song at all, I just listened to it. But I agree, there is some sort of family issue here. I believe it is always a great idea to deal with our own personal issues inside of our selves first so that we may build strong family attachments. I hope that every person who reads these lyrics finds overtherainbow's interpretation inspiring.
