You Belong to Me Lyrics

See the pyramids around the Nile
Watch the sun rise
From the tropic isle
Just remember darling
All the while
You belong to me
See the market place
In old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember
When a dream appears
You belong to me

And I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too

Fly the ocean
In a silver plane
See the jungle
When it's wet with rain
Just remember till
You're home again
You belong to me

Oh I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too

Fly the ocean
In a silver plane
See the jungle
When it's wet with rain
Just remember till
You're home again
You belong to me

I actually don't think he's being possessive... To me it's just an incredibly beautiful song, about that woman travelling the world and seeing all kinds of beautiful places, and he's just being very honest in telling her that he's going to miss her. Seems like he's scared she might not be coming back, so that's why he's saying that she belongs to him... Such a beautiful song!

I love this song, it has a really honest feel about it. It's pretty obviousl what it's about but I think it's about two lovers who have to be separated for one reason or another, and one is saying to the other please don't forget me. My brother did point out though that it could seem a little controlling, with the whole 'you belong to me' thing. But I think that he's trying to say remember us rather than trying to be possessive

I agree! This boy sang it in Form 3 music, and it was amazing. It really makes a difference when you understand the emotion this guy displays when he sang it =D.

I think rather than "dont forget me" hes saying "dont forget about me", like while your having a good time, remember the ones who love you, be faithful.

One interpretation could be that it's about a couple, one of them has passed away, leaving the other lonely. The one that has passed away is singing from above while the other tries to keep himself/herself busy travelling the world and seeing places to take their mind off their partner.

This interpretation is solely derived from when I saw an old man singing it beautifully for his wife who had recently passed away from cancer, it was heartbreaking.

i just put this song on repeat and it just strums away to a gentle beat its so relaxing, simply amazing

i agree, in saying that it is a little controling it seems to me like a woman has been taken to all these amazing places, away from her lover/huband/partner, and he's just reminding her that although she may be in all these wonderful places, her heart still belongs at home with him, and she cannot get away from this.

amazing though

Obviously it's about separated lovers. The lyrics sound a little bitter, as if the narrator doesn't quite want their lover to have as good a time on their own as if they were together, but I think the lover left behind is that sad that they'll be left on their own, and this would probably just be inner dialogue. On the outside, they probably wouldn't say 'I'll be lonely, and I hope you'll be lonely without me' lol.

If the lonely thing was said to the departing lover's face, it would probably be referring to being romantically and sexually lonely (ie. be faithful to me while we're apart), probably not emotional loneliness.

It's quite a lyrically honest way of looking at the situation in my opinion.

This isn't about a man controlling a woman or anything either, because this song is decades old, and both genders have recorded versions.
