Wake up, son of mine.
Momma got something to tell you.
Changes come.
Life will have its way with your pride, son.
Take it like a man.
Hang on, son of mine.
A storm is blowing on the horizon.
Changes come.
Keep your dignity.
Take the high road,
Take it like a man.
Listen up, son of mine.
Momma got something to tell you.
All about growing pains.
Life will pound away where the light don't shine, son.
Take it like a man.
Suck it up, son of mine.
Thunder blowing up the horizon.
Changes come.
Keep your dignity.
Take the high road.
Take it like a man.
Momma said like the rain,
this too shall pass like a kidney stone.
It's just a broken heart, son.
This pain will pass away.
Momma got something to tell you.
Changes come.
Life will have its way with your pride, son.
Take it like a man.
A storm is blowing on the horizon.
Keep your dignity.

Just something I noticed. Dunno if Maynard did this on purpose or I'm just reading too into it, but it seems to me there is a story to be told..
@Lynx983 Im pretty sure your interpretation of Momma said is wrong. Almost all comments here have it wrong, Its about child abuse.

This song is not about child abuse. It's about getting over a breakup.

I don't get why people think that being humorous means you're not being serious
I decided a few years ago to get 'Changes Come' tattooed to my wrist, because of this song. It makes me stronger just to look at it. I love this song, and I love Puscifer <3

Way I see it, the message isn't an admonishment or wake-up call. It's a message of strength in a time of pain. It's saying, "It hurts, and it'll get worse before it gets better, but you're not going to break. Shit happens. You wouldn't be here if you weren't strong enough to take it."
@Promise942 Yes, but you missed the bigger picture. The song is about child abuse.

I think it's a mother's advice to her son about being dumped, rejected or cheated on by a girlfriend. "It's just a broken heart, son. This pain will pass away." The growing pains part just symbolises that it's a transition between being a child and taking it like a man.
The entire album has the tone about dominant women in a man's life.
@Orichalcon The song is about child abuse, its pretty obvious when you think about it. A bit like prison sex..

Absolutely beautiful.
Sounds a lot like childhood abuse to me. A lot of Maynard's songs do. With this particular one it sounds a lot like his Mother knew it was happening, or maybe even was a perpetrator, and just told him to suck it up. He was reaching out and she did what many parents did - told him that boys don't cry.
@woollymoof Yes, your right. Almost no one here understood this song.

It's really hard to take this album seriously because it is supposed to be somewhat of a humorous album, but this one actually looks like it may be from Maynard's childhood past.
beautiful song
I think this may be something along the lines his mother had told him before she passed away, RIP.
