This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
This was a triumph
I'm making a note here; "Huge success"
It's hard to overstate
My satisfaction
Aperture Science:
We do what we must
Because we can
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead
But there's no sense crying
Over every mistake
You just keep on trying
Till you run out of cake
And the science gets done
And you make a neat gun
For the people who are
Still alive
I'm not even angry
I'm being so sincere right now
Even though you broke my heart,
And killed me
And tore me to pieces
And threw every piece into a fire
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you
Now, these points of data
Make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta
We're releasing on time
So I'm GLaD I got burned
Think of all the things we learned-
For the people who are
Still alive
Go ahead and leave me
I think I'd prefer to stay inside
Maybe you'll find someone else
To help you?
Maybe Black Mesa?
That was a joke *Haha - Fat Chance*
Anyway this cake is great
It's so delicious and moist
Look at me: still talking
When there's science to do
When I look out there,
It makes me GLaD I'm not you
I've experiments to run
There is research to be done
On the people who are
Still alive
And believe me I am
Still alive
I'm doing science and I'm
Still alive
I feel fantastic and I'm
Still alive
While you're dying I'll be
Still alive
And when you're dead I will be
Still alive
Still alive
I'm making a note here; "Huge success"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Well, I guess you really have to have played Portal to get the song fully. I love the line "we do what we must because we can", sums up GlaDoS (sp?) perfectly.
The world needs more games like Portal... :)
Amen to that.
basically glados is saying that even though you destroyed her and got away...she is only a computer program so she will remain alive forever and ever..so she is sayin HA! you didnt beat me ^-^.... so when your dead she will just keep doin what she was when you were alive :/
"I think I prefer to stay inside" GLaDOS has NO life. Probally just sitting their playing the Orange Box having the full one thousand gamerscore. Sad:)
on my list of top five portal lands at num 3^^ i loved that game and i loved this song
RAHH I love this game.
The song is about a computer. That you pwn. With an awesome portal gun. But it's still aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive~~~
it's "tore me to pieces".
I love this song. My friend showed it to me. I want to play portal now!!!!!
well lol valve is a bunch of smart guys they mention black mesa[setting of first half-life game] in this song you can find it in that jukebox in L4D2 lol and it is the theme song to portal so wow thats 3 Valve game refrences dam idk but i guess it ties the stories together? and it mentions the game portal itself which takes place in Aperture Science labortories. i think it's very smart Johnathan Coulton and Valve must have worked a desent amount of time coming up with such clever refrences lol [ima nerd]lol :) feel free to tell me ur opinions on my opinion
Ok, everyone is totally missing the boat on this. There are absolutely NO metaphors in this song. The cake does not = life. Seriously. It's a creepy, awesome video game, that JoCo has brilliantly reduced down into the delicious sauce that is this song. That's it! Seriously people! Go play Portal. You won't get it until you do.
I think this entire song is a metaphor of not committing suicide. Black Mesa being suicide, cake being life, and science being experiencing life
I think you guys are both looking WAY too far into this. It's not about suicide, or living a lie, or any of that shit. It's about playing Portal—defeating GLaDOS, escaping, GLaDOS still being alive, and all that. You crazies.
