Failure Lyrics
he used to be a singer in a rock and roll band
he would write the songs and i'd tremble at his hand but oh, la laa
he lost poetic ethic and his songs were pathetic, and he's a failure now
he used to be the life and soul of everyone around
you'd never catch him looking up and never see him down but oh, la laa
he couldn't raise a smile oh not for a while and he's a failure now
don't cry child, you've got so much more to live for
don't cry child, you've got something i would die for
and if it comes to the rain, just be glad you'll smile again
'cause so many don't
and so many go unamed
people push right past me shouting their exclaims
a preacher pushes me a side and asked to wash my sins i said no, la laa
if he made me in his image, then hes a failure too
and i used to need a couple o people keep my head down
now i need a whole lot more to keep me on the ground but oh, la laa
i gave up something and i gave it up for nothing and i am failure now
dont cry child, you've got so much more to live for
dont cry child, you've got something i would die for
and if it comes to the rain, just be glad you'll smile again
'cause so many dont.
and so many go unamed

This song is so pretty... I find myself singing the chorus all the time. The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. Just telling a little story about two people.
I have no idea if it's supposed to be Pete Doherty, but I think (if my memory is correct) she used to be quite influenced by him, there was a reference to it somewhere... In candle light there's the libertines vinyl playing on his shelf, but there was some other lyrical reference more specific to doherty, it's bugging me now...
She references Pete Doherty in I Know You!!!
And where did the indie individual go? I've been looking back and I simply don't know And I think he left us with the corporate decision To make Topshop a logo And put Doherty in prison
I've always thought this song was a bit about growing up and changing. When she was young she idolized a guy but then realized who he really was and moved on. And then the second bit about God, she used to be a Christian but now she's agnostic. I read this interview with her somewhere where she talked about how kids who are really religious miss out on some of the aspects of childhood, which is what she's referring to when she says "don't cry child, you've got something I would die for." Also, "I used to need a couple people keep my head down/now I need a whole lot more to keep me on the ground" could possible be referring to her choosing not to kneel down before God anymore in church.
I love this song!
I kind of feel that this is just about how we all fuck things up sometimes and, to some extent, we're all failures, but it's okay.
"Don't cry child, you've got so much for to live for" = Move on, it's not the end of the world? "Don't cry child, you've got something I would die for" = There's something good about every person? The whole smile again, so many don't is like... you will fade away, if you don't move past your mistakes and let the positives about you shine- people won't notice you kind of thing, maybe?
I agree with the person further up who said it could be to do with growing up. I think to some extent, moving on from previous mistakes is part of growing up, and you realise things as you grow up like, your hero isn't perfect either.
I heard somewhere that she did write this song about pete doherty when she was 14
"Don't cry child, you've got something I would die for" , i think this might be about the whole innocence and joy of being a child that is lost when you grow up
It's about Pete Doherty.
I love this part: don't cry child, you've got so much more to live for don't cry child, you've got something i would die for and if it comes to the rain, just be glad you'll smile again 'cause so many don't and so many go unamed
The song is clearly about Charlie Fink of Noah and the Whale -- Laura Marling's previous romantic interest and band, respectively.
