Never really listened to Hurt before but this song is REAL sick.
It's definitely a drug high he's talking about, because he's saying how "you bought yours" and saying that "when the choice arises, you decided death from life again" I don't think it is a significant other, because it says "so I called a friend, an ear to lend who said "what is what?" and one day tried to get me high" That's my 2 cents Great band and great riffs, lots of emotion.
It's obviously an anti-drug message. I really don't think it gets any clearer than this:

What I'm reading from the song is it seems like a song after J started putting his life together. Some of his less than scrupulous friends continue to call him and ask him to go get high with them. And he declines, and that itself is fine for the thought of asking. However, these friend/s it seems are drug fiends who aren't doing anything with their life other than getting high. It's almost as that is all they're doing. So, getting high with them would also be counterproductive to what he is currently trying to accomplish.
Hmm, the meaning seems obvious, a friend or significant other who wants you to get high with them, but maybe theres more under that obvious meaning, when he says " you want me to get high with you" i kinda think it has a religious meaning, "high" as in maybe joining some religion or something, idk just my view on it

the "death from life again" means the guy went to prison and did the same crime drugs but this time did worse and choose death.
