So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
There's a little black, dark scar, tired divide
This is it, can you hear me?
Have you ever felt a sad heart buried alive?
You can do almost anything
There's a little red bridge with the view of the sun with a lake
I recommend such a setting site
And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times
And we can go, only if you believe
Only if you believe
Do you feel like you've lost everything you can lose?
This is it, can you hear me?
When you cry do your fears ever chill up the room?
Calling out in a moment of need
Do you ever lay awake with a look in the eye?
Asking god if a wish is too big to deny?
I will offer a line and it is ready for use
Let me know are you ready for me?
I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time
When the storm brings rain, snow, fate of all kinds
You can feel almost anything
When the day seems to melt, fall flat into night
You can feel almost anything
When you can't go on, you got to get up and try
This is it, can you feel me?
And when the bombs come down, we will make it alive
But only if you want to believe
I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time
I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time
(Out of time)
When I dream
When I dream
I feel your heart
When I dream
I'm out of time (I feel your heart)
When I dream
I'm out of time
I feel your heart
I feel your heart
I feel your heart

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
This is an excellent song. Well done AVA.
As for the first part, the correct lyrics are:
There's a little, black, dark, scar tire divide. This is it can you hear me? Have you ever felt a sad heart buried alive? You can so almost anything. There's a little red bridge with a view of the sun, With a lake, recommends such a selling sight. And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times. You can go only if you believe.
So I just joined to post my thoughts on the song meaning:<br /> <br /> I think it's about someone trying to help their friend (more like a lover, but why confine it to relationships?) through a rough time, and progress is slow.<br /> <br /> "There's a little black, dark, scar, tired divide<br /> This is it can you hear me?<br /> Have you ever heard a sad heart buried alive?<br /> You can do almost anything<br /> With a little red bridge with a view of the sun,<br /> With a lake, recommend such a sunny sight<br /> And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times<br /> You can go only if you believe"<br /> <br /> Basically: Your heart is broken and your life feels dark. Bury the broken heart and imagine a better place/state you could be in. But you can only go if you believe it exists and that this isn't the end of the world.<br /> <br /> "I will offer a line that is ready for use<br /> Let me know are you ready for me"<br /> <br /> I'm waiting here until you're ready to let me help you.<br /> <br /> "I'd like to say, that you're my only fear<br /> And when I dream, it slowly disappears<br /> And when I wake, I'm right here by your side<br /> To feel your heart, beat in and out of time"<br /> <br /> He's worried for this person. When he dreams, he may be imagining the person rising above this problem. But until that happens, in reality, he's still there waiting for them to pull through, listening to their heart "beat in and out of time," which may symbolize their good and bad days as they fight through it, "in time" being a high point, and "out of time" being a low point.<br /> <br /> Ta da! This is so late for this forum, but I wanted to put my two cents in anyway.<br />
