There's a little black, dark scar, tired divide
This is it, can you hear me?
Have you ever felt a sad heart buried alive?
You can do almost anything
There's a little red bridge with the view of the sun with a lake
I recommend such a setting site
And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times
And we can go, only if you believe

Only if you believe

Do you feel like you've lost everything you can lose?
This is it, can you hear me?
When you cry do your fears ever chill up the room?
Calling out in a moment of need
Do you ever lay awake with a look in the eye?
Asking god if a wish is too big to deny?
I will offer a line and it is ready for use
Let me know are you ready for me?

I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time

When the storm brings rain, snow, fate of all kinds
You can feel almost anything
When the day seems to melt, fall flat into night
You can feel almost anything
When you can't go on, you got to get up and try
This is it, can you feel me?
And when the bombs come down, we will make it alive
But only if you want to believe

I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time
I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time

(Out of time)
When I dream
When I dream
I feel your heart
When I dream
I'm out of time (I feel your heart)
When I dream
I'm out of time
I feel your heart
I feel your heart
I feel your heart
I feel your heart

I'd like to say, that you're my only fear
And when I dream, it slowly disappears
And when I wake, I'm right here by your side
To feel your heart, beat in and out of time

30 something comments and only a few are actually trying to interpret the meaning of this song...Awesome. These lyrics are so complex that I don't think I can justify what the complete meaning is but the first few lines I'm really not sure about so if someone can explain it that would be great. But I feel as though it's such a powerful verse that's saying there is so much to do in this world and there are so many wonderful things in the simplest things.

"With a little red bridge with a view of the sun, With a lake, recommend such a sunny sight, And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times, You can go only if you believe."

That just gives me such a peaceful image of little things that give us reason to believe and hope. The second verse is kind of like he's taking those positive images of the first and just stating sad situations and negative things that people experience...

I'm really not sure. Another interpretation after reading the lyrics over is maybe it's about a guy who is about to die and he's just going through happiness, sadness, and fear before his time comes. He's talking to God asking him if he's ready for him and at the same time he's talking about dying as his only fear but when he's dreaming his fears subside and he comes to terms with it. When he's awake he tells himself he can only go if he believes... maybe in heaven, maybe in reincarnation? But I feel like this could also be about someone he loves and hes talking to them and telling them he loves them before he dies.

"When the storm brings rain, snow, fate of all kinds You can feel almost anything When the day seems to melt , fall flat in the night You can feel almost anything When you can’t go on, you got to get up and try This is it can you feel me?"

He wants her to keep on believing and going on with her life because he's there next to her; he's asking her if she can feel him by her side.

*I don't really know if this makes any sense but all I can really be sure about is that this song is about hope, believing, and living; not letting obstacles stop you from living the life you want to live and moving past the negative things to find happiness even in the simplest of things. This song just makes me feel revitalized... it would be nice to hear someone elses meaning.

wow. i came to this site specifically to see what this song meant, and you were all too busy talking about how you dislike the band, or how you want to see them live. or correcting the lyrics. IF YOU THINK THE LYRICS ARE WRONG, WHATEVER. LOOK THEM UP ON GOOGLE.

srsly, this is songmeanings.net you need to tell what this song is about, TO YOU. don't turn my favorite website into one i now hate. okay,?

i feel this song is about how he lost a girl that he loves. but he feels so helpless, and there is nothing he can do about this situation, the relationship is way past over. but in his heart, in his dreams, it will go on forever.

either that, OR THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE,!

it could be about him saying that this relationship, everything seems to be going against it. pointing out that it is a bad relationship, but its all he wants. and he desperatly wants it to work out. and hes afraid to love, hes afraid to give everything to her. but when he dreams, he is on the brightside of the relationship. and when he's in the quiet times of his life with her, it's amazing. it's just him and her. but other than that, everything is too bad, and too strong, and his relationship w/ her is too weak to take it on.

    idk. how do u feel?

This song is about perservering in the face of fear and adversity by believing that you can.

"Do you feel like you've lost everything you can lose?" "When you cry do your tears ever chill up the room?" "Do you ever lay awake with a look in the eye asking God if a wish is too big to deny?" "When the storm brings rain, snow, fate of all kinds" "When the day seems to melt, fall flat in the night" "When you can't go on, you got to get up and try" "When the bombs come down you will make it alive, only if you want to believe"

It's also about Tom's personal worst fear, never seeing the person he's sleeping next to again.

"I'd like to say, that you're my only fear" "And when I dream, it slowly disappears" "And when I wake, I'm right here by your side" "To feel your heart, beat in and out of time"

callaway53: true Tom isnt the best live singer, one of the reasons is b/c most of the time he gets absolutey fucked up before a show. he usually always drinks b4 shows. when he really needs to be good, he isnt all that bad.

Kind of a different take on it here, but with the title being Call to Arms, I think the song is supposed to be a message home from a troops to his worrying family, trying to comfort them and let them know that he will be fine as long as they have strength and believe in him. On a more general scale, this song is simply about self sacrifice and trying to give hope to another who is going through a difficult time. Saying no matter how hard it gets, if we share the burden and believe in ourselves we will make it.

The first thing that caught my attention was the title call to arms, as in, when a man or women is called upon and asked to fight for their country. So I see this as a man leaving his wife for war. And in the first verse he starts laying down a beautiful scene, a place where they can go to feel peace and feel like they are still with each other despite him being gone. And I like the second verse a lot, because I think it's the husband writing back home, asking how his wife is coping with what he's doing and going through, and then he says " I will offer a line, and it's ready for use". And that leads back into the scene that was laid down before, the place where they can feel peace. And the final verse is the wife writing back, basically writing, you can survive this war if you believe.

I really love this song, I think it can relate to anytime you leave someone you love very much. But there is always a place you can go in your head to feel their arms again and feel peace, until your reunite. Excellent work Tom and Angels and Airwaves

heres a rough draft of the whole song, i know alot of shit will be wrong but youll get the picture of the song from here....

    My Only Fear

There’s a little black dark scar type of light, This is it, can you hear me? Have you ever felt sad, hope and alive? You can do almost anything.

There’s a little red bridge with a view of the sun with the light will commence not just any sign And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times We can go only if you believe (only if you believe)

Do you feel like you lost everything you can lose? This is it, can you hear me? When you cry and your tears they project the room, going out in your moment of need. Do you ever know light, with the look in their eyes, and if not then their wish is to make it tonight I’ll offer a lie that was ready for use. Let me know, are you ready for me?

I’d like to say, that you’re my only fear And when I dream, it slowly disappears And when I awake, I’m right here by your side To feel your heart! Beat in, and out, of time

    (Cheers)

When the storm brings rain, snow, hail or ice, (?) You can be almost anything. When the day seems to melt, fall flat in the night You can be almost anything When you can’t go out, you’ve got to get up and try, This is it, can you feel me? When the bombs come down, you will make it alive, But only if you wanna believe

I’d like to say, that you’re my only fear And when I dream, it slowly disappears And when I awake, I’m right here by your side To feel your heart! Beat in, and out, of time

I’d like to say, that you’re my only fear And when I dream, it slowly disappears And when I awake, I’m right here by your side To feel your heart! Beat in, and out, of time

    (Out of time)

When I dream When I dream, I feel your heart When I dream, and out of time (I feel your heart) When I dream (and out of time)

I feel your heart I feel your heart I feel your heart I feel your heart

I’d like to say, that you’re my only fear And when I dream, it slowly disappears And when I awake, I’m right here by your side To feel your heart! Beat in, and out, of time

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
