Long Road To Ruin Lyrics

Hey now don't make a sound
Say hey have you heard the news today
One flag was taken down
To raise another in its place
A heavy cross you bear
A stubborn heart remains unchanged
No harm, no life, no love
No stranger singing in your name

Maybe the season
The colors change in the valley skies
Dear God I've sealed my fate
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead end in sight

Let's say we take this town
No king or queen of any state
Get up to shut it down
Open the streets and raise the gates
I know a wall to scale
I know a field without a name
Head on without a care
Before it's way too late

Maybe the season
The colors change in the valley skies
Oh God I've sealed my fate
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead end in sight

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead end in sight

For every piece to fall in place
Forever gone without a trace
Your horizon takes its shape
No turning back, don't turn that page

Come now, I'm leaving here tonight
Come now, let's leave it all behind
Is that the price you pay
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead ends

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead ends

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead end in sight

I get so sick of people relating all of grohl's lyrics to kurt cobain. Nirvana was amazing, but its over now. Foo Fighters was grohls way of movingon.

pretty good, i agree the guitar solo really steps it up a notch. but it's "hey now don't make a sound..." instead of "here"..

although from a personal point of view it's not the greatest foo fighters song of all time, it's still alright. this seemed like a very ambitious thing to release as their 2nd song considering it was released behind 1 of their most successful tracks ever, in "the pretender" (probably their 2nd most successful song behind the immortal "best of you"). also ambitious because the song and the film clip is so different to the foo fighters usual style, but this song just shows you how much of a talent and how versatile dave grohl is with his songwriting skills. this song seems like to be about someone who cannot get what he wants and is prepared to pay any price to get it. the groovy video clip doesn't make me feel any hurt when i listen to this song, but i have felt before that i feel i love someone and they don't feel the same way about me, which has hurt me. if i listen to this song more often, i could connect to this song, which is what it could be about, a guy who feels strong love to another woman but they don't feel the same way about them.

At first, before I read some of the interpretations here, I thought this song was really ambiguous. I didn't think it had that deep a meaning, cuz it seems like a pretty formulaic song.

But, after reading your interpretations, this song is pretty ambiguous, but in a whole new fashion. It can be a love, but it also makes sense to be interpreted as a farewell to the Bush regime, and it also makes sense to be a song about an invasion on a city.

I guess this song is pretty much applicable to many things.

first off let me say this is a wonderful song the foo fighters are simply amazing. Definitely one of the last good rock bands. The song is a love song no doubt , but i believe it goes way in more dept then that. i believe somehow life has gotten in the way of their relationship. so dave grohl paints a picture of what their relationship would be like if only this world was , how it should be , much more simpler.if only her and him could be together without the complexity of everyday life. no laws , no bills , no jobs ...

"Let's say we take this town

I believe these lyrics are just used to paint a picture of a purer time like I stated before a empty town where no one could interfere with their love.

“No king or queen of any state”

this reminds me of medieval days. And how much better life would be if we could just stop and again a beautiful day , a river , maybe just the sun. life will be over before you know it and what did you do work your life away for things you really didn’t need in the end.

“Get up to shut it down”

no clue im guessing it just sounded good in the song

“Open the streets and raise the gates”

Just shows happiness and pride of how no one else will ever ruin their relationship. Picture a man who has just lost the love of his life. He’s sitting in a dark room , crying with a bottle of jack in his hands. Prayer if only they would have lived in a better place everything would of worked out. The price will pay for becoming less human everyday is forgetting how to love.

“I know one wall to scale”

An obstacle he wants to over come. Something that stood in the way of their love. Money maybe. Or distances or maybe temptation

“I know a field without a name”

why don’t we name fields? Because fields are not of importance. But they are sure as hell beautiful .

“Head on without a care”

we would all be different people with out stress and pressure. We worry about the little things looks, money and forget about the big picture family, having someone who loves you.

“Before it's way too late"

I think these lyrics speak for themselves you have to be getting tired of my rambling by now.

he must of made a mistake , but doesnt blame himself he believe that life has gotten in the way of their relationship.

"Running through hell, heaven can wait"

Obliviously means you have to get through the bad times to get to the good ones. ( but it reminds me of a man who choices hell over heaven. maybe his love was doomed to hell and he choices enternal pain and suffering to be with her.)

"For every piece to fall in place

this means for love to work out everything has to be perfect. it truly shows just how fragile true love exactly is. A rose?

"Forever gone without a trace"

you always say you will love someone forever. You’ll love them until the end of time. How many people have you said this too? And how many times has forever been gone with out a trace?

“Your horizon takes its shape”

He’s starting to realize he isnt going to be part of her future. A girl he loved, is going to be able to be happy again without him. He’ll remember her everyday , two years from now she won’t even remember his name.

“No turning back, don't turn that page"

Don’t turn the next page in the story of her life . don’t start a new chapter , because he’s not a part of the next chapter of her life.

These are just my interpretation of some lyrics for this song. But what I love is that someone could read the same lyrics and think something completely different. that’s what makes music so great.

@even_love_can_die 'Get up to shut it down'....right after that King and Queen reference is clearly an anti-government anti-establishment statement.

Aboot Cobain? Are you serious, or yet another fan claiming yet another Foos song is aboot the genius frontman's death (not to be so cynical, but you know what so many fellow Nirvana fans falsely claim). This song isn't too bad, but honestly, there are better Foos songs out there. The video's funny, but being played on MTV a lot, which is sort of commercial (I'm not a big fan of MTV, it's sort of a sellout-once-music channel; stations like FUSE are way better, actually talking aboot and playing actual music) makes it slightly less appealing.

I think the repetition of "Long Road to Ruin, There in your eyes" means that they could see by looking at someone that they have had many problems and got nothing for. Like is you walking say 50 miles and you only found dirt, there was no reward for the long trek.

My Interpretation

@emma105044 I also think it;s funny how no one else interpreted the main line of the song "Long Road To Ruin".

Not bad song. What makes this song is the guitar solo, but otherwise pretty basic for the foos.
