i dont know, i think its about a one night stand which is a mistake, unrequited love and such. She feels upset by what they have done and he comforts her by telling her that he is ok with whatever she wants to do; but he still loves her, "i'll take you home" but "tonight means nothing if we stay". Later he realises that his lesson is that he should love her from afar as she doesnt feel the same, "stand downwind and watch it burn" as for the "careful kid" section, i think its him saying that if he stays, she will feel the same.

I don't think it's about a one night stand. I think it's about a man who has committed a crime in a rough neighbourhood and a young kid has witnessed it, and his warning to the kid. Essentially a comment on the sad state of many young lives in urban Australia is that a lot of kids are born into environments where crime is the norm, and I think that's what this is about...

The lesson learned is to keep to yourself. A predator will be hard pressed to smell prey that is downwind, it's essentially invisible. Pretty much he's saying "Kid, you look after yourself, keep out of trouble". The lake is where he washes away the evidence...be that a murder weapon or whatever

i was listening to an interview on radio the other day where they asked the meaning of this song and it is about the lead singers obsession with the band, and how he can only obsess over making it the best he can
Although apparently it had already been answered by Phat Gibbo, I think the closest meaning that can come from this song would be around the "one night stand" theme talked previously.
The criminal environment one was just stupid and honestly, beside this meaning there can't be any other beside the real one answered in their interview.
