Hearts of Iron Lyrics
Six shades were gold
in what was iron
that broke them all
and left you lying in bed
a bitter maul
very very small
you thought the sea
could make her belly swell
in a better dream
you wake and pace the hall
spitting bowl and seeds
those iron brothers
and that's a dream
nothing matters at all
at all
at all
nothing matters at all
at all
at all
when you regrow home in hearts of iron
when you regrow home in hearts of iron
when you regrow home in hearts of iron
when you regrow home in hearts of iron
in what was iron
that broke them all
and left you lying in bed
a bitter maul
very very small
could make her belly swell
in a better dream
you wake and pace the hall
spitting bowl and seeds
those iron brothers
and that's a dream
nothing matters at all
at all
at all
nothing matters at all
at all
at all
when you regrow home in hearts of iron
when you regrow home in hearts of iron
when you regrow home in hearts of iron

I am hearing this:
"six eggs were gold and one was iron that broke them all and left you lying in bed in a bed of moss very very small

when did we grow old in hearts of iron when did we grow old in hearts of iron (naked?) when did we grow old in hearts of iron when did we grow old in hearts of iron"
the first verse is about those birds that lay their egg in other birds' nests. And their egg hatches first among the other bird's eggs, and destroys them prematurely. But one of them survives.
Not sure about the second verse exactly. But the person who wakes up and seems to be surrounded by these "iron" birds.
And the last little bit, I suppose suggesting "we" are/have been the iron birds.
Just an interpretation I suppose.
sorry listened to it again. The line in the second verse should be "WHEN that's a dream"
I agree with most of your lyrics, mr. doodle. Except, I don't think the second verse starts with a question. I think it is:
You thought the sea could make her belly swell In a bad dream...
Also, in the repeated lines at the end, the second one sounds to me like: When did we come home in hearts of iron naked?
Interesting about the birds who lay eggs in other birds nests. I hadn't thought of that, but it seems right on. I am still contemplating the meaning of this one. Obviously, a couple whose hearts have hardened toward each other. But the references to fertility/pregnancy. Hmmm... still thinking.
this is what i heard:
six eggs were gold and one was iron i broke them all and left you lying in bed one bed of moss, very very small
you thought the sea could make her belly swell in a bad dream you wake and pace the hallway spitting gold seeds there's iron brothers
my life's a dream nothing matters at all at all, at all nothing matters at all at all, at all

when did we grow cold in hearts of iron when did we grow old in hearts of iron baby when did we grow old in hearts of iron
*he either says old or cold. i think the "baby" part is him talking to his wife/girlfriend, asking her when did they get either old or cold
actually, he might be saying "when did we go home in hearts of iron"
I saw these guys at a show in December 07, and the guy actually explained the story behind this song.
He said it was about going through a divorce as a kid and he was living with his dad after and he made them breakfast... I think he explained it better than I can. hah.
the lyrics go "Dad broke them all..." Referring to the eggs his dad made in the morning. I guess I read too deeply into it!
