Seal Jubilee Lyrics

The seals, they cried in jubilee
The sharks, they howled along with me
And birds, they flew into the wind
The whale, he roamed the lonely sea

And I dived into you
I dived into you
On this ocean hue
'Cos I dived into you

The lighthouse dog lifted his brow
The crippled trees bent low to growl
And swans, they wrestled with lifetime's grasp
In hopefullness they nestled the past
Teachers and travellers made their mark
They dined and feasted on whale and shark
And so the ocean lost its depths
And boredom reigned as the ocean wept

Birds they raised their young for dead
And ladies used feathery pillows for bed
And black snow came and black snow stayed
And froze the ocean out of love
Out of love

I lay quiet, next to you
Transformed a whole
Transformed anew
No longer diving into
But lying quiet next
To you

this is about the world falling apart, basically blaming us humans for destroying it, for an example, birds they raise their young for dead, ladies use feathery pillows for bed

This song is so peaceful..

but wouldn't it make more sense if it said:

And boredom reigned as the ocean wept?

God I love this song...

a take on how humans destroy mother nature AND a ruined love affair?

Cover art for Seal Jubilee lyrics by Bat for Lashes

I had the theory this was about the sea drying up, but now that I see it, yeah it is about humanity destroying nature.

I guess the inserts about the relationship are possibly the human effect- there was a time when our love had a meaning and purpose, a time when we both enjoyed it. But what is to become of it now when there is no future? Is it all in vain?

I get the feeling the last part is spoken from the view of someone who is dwelling on their thoughts after waking up in the middle of the night. Their partner is asleep so they only have themself at that moment and they think about all this...it changes them.

It annoys me that she says "dived" when you are supposed to say "dove." :(

Dived is older, and looks better when written down than "dove" (a type of bird?). "I dove in" is harder to sing as well, I think.

From a grammar rules site:

"Although DOVE is commonly used as a past-tense form of the word DIVE, it is still considered non-standard English by many. The more commonly accepted DIVED should be used in academic writing."

Another site also says this (which I suspected):

"Also, the British ONLY [my emphasis] use 'dived', but Canadians and Americans use 'dived' and 'dove'." Makes sense why she uses "dived".

i think she chose "dived" over "dove" on purpose, since it sounds pretty much like " i DIE into you" which would support the theory of dying nature. i love this part btw.

It's the opening line that makes me wonder about this song. It starts so happy... but then the sharks howl, and the whale is lonely. The Black Snow, that ends it all... another mystery. Pollution wouldn't stay "out of love", so what is it?

I think that 'out of love' thing might be human concern. The black snow is possibly a metaphor for pollution/destruction. When she describes it being froze out of love I think it means that it is so damaged, so beyond something in our control that we essentially abandon it, stop trying to save it and let it end.

a song of stark beauty, up there with pagan poetry...

i sense analogies between the inevitable struggle within Nature ("Birds they raised their young...") and the fulfillment/emptiness of post-coital bliss ("lying quiet next to you"), though the "black snow" bit still evades me...

Whoa there! I thought it was just a beautiful song about sex!
