The Sound of Truth Lyrics

we have all heard what we wanted to hear
truth that sounds right to our ears

but what wisdom is there within us
to live based on the feeling of our hearts
how many times has instinct let us down
never to be thought through
never to be questioned

say what you really mean
when your ambition calls you
for what use is there in praying
if you will only hear what you want to hear?

we have all heard what we wanted to hear
truth that sounds right to our ears

we speak of fighting to resist this world
but what about the battle within us?
if we have chosen to live against the grain
then why are we all facing the same way?

(solo)

there is no difference between us and them
if we all blindly seek truth from sentiments

(solo continued)

we have all heard what we wanted to hear
truth that sounds right to our ears

This song obviously means that as humans we hear what we want, do what we want, and worship what we want, despite what the real truth is. We turn to diversity as an answer for acceptance when it comes to our appearance, our possesions, our clothes, and even our souls. These lyrics don't just stop there. We get shot down because of our bull-headed attitudes, and our strive for acceptance is turned into a vain struggle to express what really isn't there. Down in the core of every one of us is a soul that yearns for the truth, just like everyone else, but we often turn to our human nature and stupify ourselves with what we want to hear as truth.

As I Lay Dying has never let me down. They have only shocked and amazed me throughout all their albums. It seems every album gets better and better, and there is no doubt in their incredible ability to spread the good message for the good fight.

Sentiment tender, romantic, or nostalgic feeling or emotion. In other words, we if we seek truth by our feelings.

I really like this song. It can be interpreted in many ways. To me, though, I think it could be about being an authentic Christian. For those of us that have maybe gone to church or heard parts of the bible, we ‘feel’ a certain way about how to live life the right way. But Tim is saying that at some point, a person gets sick of feeling, and gets sick of feeling good in the church. Feeling good passes so quickly. I know this, it has happened to me so many times. I can never be “good,” like the church portrays that I’m supposed to be. In truth, I never will be. “but what wisdom is there within us.” We seek to find answers. Many “smart” people looked for answers to life when Jesus was still alive. When these smart people, the Pharisees, asked Him for answers, he answered that he was the wisdom, He was the truth. If we don’t base truth on something we heard from a human, and instead base it on facts, we would see what true wisdom is. 1 Cor. 1:30 “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.” “there is no difference between us and them if we all blindly seek truth from sentiments.” As Christians, we were not made to live apart from Jesus. If we live based on a feeling, how are we different from nonchristians who live for this world?

1st yes, i think this song means the theres no in praying and looking to god for help if we only interprept what we want and nothing else becuase who are we to judge these then it says that we all talk of resisting the norm or "living against the grain" but in reallity we all just want to be acceted so we just follow the crowd anyway and don't do anything different

You're so wrong. Tim Lambesis has a great connection with God, so I doubt he'd be writing nihilistic lyrics. a This song is about people who listen to what they want to listen to but disregard anything they don't agree with or is contrary to what they think. It's saying that no matter what is said, we will inevitably only obtain what we feel is most important or "the truth". When Tim says:

"but what wisdom is there within us to live based on the feeling of our hearts how many times has instinct let us down never to be thought...

favorite song on the album.

fox boy is right on, it's about asking people why they seek God for truth and answers when they can't realize that their biases and emotions cause them to hear what they want to hear in the first place... "there is no difference between us" and unbelievers if we all just act on what we feel is right. We have to look past what we want to happen and put others interests ahead of our own.

I agree with both of you from a Christian stand point but Im an Atheist and Im gonna tell you what the lyrics mean to me.

"we have all heard what we wanted to hear truth that sounds right to our ears" I believe it means how biased a person can be. People choose to ignore listening to reason, think what they want to think despite what anyone else says and hear what they want to hear. If someone doesnt believe in something that they do the odd ball generally gets shut out because they anger the others for thinking differently....

i agree with the both of you

Agreed with both of you.

See, but there's a part here that I don't really understand:

"there is no difference between us and them if we all blindly seek truth from sentiments"

I don't get what that means -.-

@pxscion A sentiment is a thought based on feeling, so it's saying there is no difference between Christians and non-believers if we all look for something else (instead of God) to solve our problems.

For me, this song proves how much this band has grown. I think it's great that they're trying to steer away from their metalcore roots, it's about time too. This is the only song that has a scent of melodic death metal, perhaps they're hinting maybe this might be their next direction.

The album is by far their greatest work, I believe this is the real beginning of AILD, I hope they'll keep more coming.

I agree with saveall. The way I have always seen AILD, is if you take their album as a whole. The "lessons" they portray are throughout their whole album. Like, if you take "This Is Who We Are" and this song, I think they pair up nicely, musically and sentimentally.BTW "This Is Who We Are" is my next favorite on this album, I love the vocals and guitars on both of them. They have really grown.
