This Song Is Called Lyrics
I am the speaker but what is responsibility?
This is beg of you, build me brick upon brick.
High tides; waves of hypocrisy.
I didn't think the clock struck more than twelve times.
I decided to name her insomnia.
"Her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit"
This I must tell you, old friend: fear beauty.
This is meager, this is feeble.
She was only a fiction and my creation
This is beg of you, build me brick upon brick.
High tides; waves of hypocrisy.
I didn't think the clock struck more than twelve times.
I decided to name her insomnia.
"Her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit"
This I must tell you, old friend: fear beauty.
This is meager, this is feeble.
She was only a fiction and my creation

i love this song a lot, i love when the singer hits the same note as the synth at 1:27
i get chills
Don't look too far when trying to find meaning in The Devil Wears Prada songs. The simple reason being that as a band, they are required by contract to appeal to the broadest audience possible. This means that their lyrics are kept vague and have no clear "universal" meaning. The following is an obvious and literal analysis of the song as it is based on verified facts. It is the only type of acceptable song analysis as it is objective and does not assume intimate knowledge of the author's sentiment and intentions.

"I am the speaker but what...
"I am the speaker but what is responsibility?" means: I say words but I ponder their effect on reality.
"This I beg of you, build me brick upon brick" means: I am nothing and need someone else to tell me who to be. Please note this is not Christian at all. If you read the bible you should not have any questions about how or who to be. The lessons in the bible are straight forward.
"High tides; waves of hypocrisy" means: It's out of context and has no obvious meaning. A dumb lyric.
"I didn't think the clock struck more than twelve times" means that it's late and the author is surprised. "Oh my! Did you look at the time?"
"I decided to name her insomnia" means: He is up late and is making a big deal of it.
"Her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit" means: The author read "The picture of Dorian Gray" and remembered to take the quote as a lyric. The "Scarlet fruit" is the color of the skin that is inside everyone's mouth. When you smile your gums are red (scarlet means red) and your teeth stick out of them like seeds (because teeth are white). This has no observable relation to Adam and Eve and anyone who claims it does should not drink water with fluoride in it!
"This I must tell you, old friend: fear beauty" means: This is a reference to "The picture of Dorian Gray" because in the book the protagonist chases beauty and is ultimately betrayed by it. It also means the author is idiotic. Dumb lyrics, not subtle at all.
"This is meager, this is feeble" means: Again a reference to "beauty" as it is written about by Oscar Wilde because it is fleeting and ephemeral. And that means that those who seek beauty always lose it. It is not a good thing to want to be beautiful. A person is beautiful in their hard work and values, not in their looks.
"She was only a fiction and my creation" means: The author is talking about beauty. He is saying beauty isn't real. We only perceive it as such.
In conclusion, I think it would be fair to say that the Theme of the song is "beauty" and "values" and makes allusions to and quotes the book "The picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. TO ALL OBTUSE CHRISTIANS OUT THERE, PLEASE WORK HARDER IN YOUR ANALYSES BECAUSE YOU'RE LEADING PEOPLE TO THINK THAT ALL TWDP SONGS HAVE A DIRECT RELATION TO CHRISTIANITY WHEN IT IS NOT THE CASE AT ALL. THEY VAGUELY REFERENCE PASSAGES IN THE BIBLE AT BEST.
Um, your retarded if you think this is "an obvious and literal analysis of the song as it is based on verified facts. It is the only type of acceptable song analysis as it is objective and does not assume intimate knowledge of the author's sentiment and intentions." They all are Christians, i've seen them live, the admit it on stage. Their songs have relation to Christianity for the sole fact that the consider and admit to BEING Christians. So before you think that your infinite knowledge knows everything about everything, think before you speak. And who says he's even read "the picture of dorian gray"? Cause if this is verified facts give me the link to the interview where he states this. Cause your verified facts are a little misconstrued.
her teeth, like white seeds in a scarlet fruit.
i dont know why you guys dont know it
its the teeth of a woman and the scarlet fruit are her lips, deep red lipstick and white teeth, see the picture
its oscar wilde, from the picture of dorian gray, which is about lust in a sense of seeking new pleasures. good and bad, and about vanity
i believe this song is about lust and beauty . ita about how temptation clouds our judgment and we put an obsession on beauty and that strays you away from how things or a person really is.
wow dude nobody could have explained it better. i was reading through and everyone made the most off the wall explainations that i refused to beleive. but how would u know that its a quote from the book "the picture of Dorian Gray"? like how does everyone know that? lol i never read that book but i could tell it was a quote from something. its probebly the sickest line in the song tho. great explaination dude.

This is such a good song, love it. and what does "her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit" mean...
"Her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit" Red, or scarlet in this case, is a representation of sin whereas the color white represents good or holiness. So the line means that she is the good standing out amongst the sinners.

In the song Mike is asking God to make him stronger to resist temptation and sin - "This i beg of you build me brick upon brick." The lines "High tides; waves of hypocrisy. I didn't think the clock struck more than twelve times. I decided to name her insomnia." symbolizes the constant struggles of temptation we face and how we are drawn away from God and purity. "She was only fiction and my creation," represents worshiping of an idol or false god.
That quote is from a book by Oscar Wilde (Who was not Christian at all) called "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and you should read it. So don't listen to the people who assume every TDWP song is about or directly referencing anything from the bible because TDWP as a band has to appeal to as broad an audience as possible and this means that all their lyrics are vague and subject to the listeners interpretation. In brief, TWDP songs have no specific meaning.

@deathofhonor You are not a good Christian and I'll tell you why. God calls upon all of us to be shepherds, to lead those who do not know or do not see in the RIGHT direction. So, you are a bad Christian because in your reply to "brando911" you made no mention of who the quote was originally from and gave an explanation based on an opinion. There was nothing true about what you said because it's what you think someone meant who themselves where quoting someone else and taking the quote out of it's context and giving it a...

There was nothing true about what you said because it's what you think someone meant who themselves where quoting someone else and taking the quote out of it's context and giving it a completely new meaning. To make a long story short, the quote has no meaning and could not have any meaning other than the image it proposes. Being a good Christian means you have to work hard and be factual. You have done neither.
@criticalthinking 1 - TDWP does not HAVE to "appeal to as broad an audience as possible" and they state so, and 2 - "being a good christian means" not judging others, you bible-incompetent fool. heres a good verse for you:

Matthew 7:1-5 "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how...

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye."
Its called intelligence...think before you speak, you "critical thinker"
@criticalthinking Again you prove your retarded in your reply to @deathofhonor. Psalm 34:6 This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. That backs deathofhonor saying "Mike is asking God to make him stronger to resist temptation and sin." Seconde swirle13's verse: Matthew 7:1-5 "Judge not, that you be not judged. You are no one to be judging what a good christian and a bad christian are unless you claim to be perfect.
Have the decency of being factual in your replies. Quoting the bible does not constitute fact or a valid argument in a logical discussion. I'll retract my previous statement though and admit it was presumptuous. deathofhonor may be a great christian but he is a bad person who does not care for logic or facts. All three of you are bigots. A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, irrationality, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

swirle13: "not judging others, you bible-incompetent fool" animosity and intolerance based of belief and personal interpretation, not facts.
ifonlyyouandi57: "Again you prove your retarded" You couldn't spell "you're" properly but went ahead and called me retarded which is an irrational and violent judgment based on personal beliefs.
Both of you are going to have to face the fact that there is no arguing logic with religion because logic is a superior path of reasoning. This is an observable fact of life as it yields better results in any situation. God wasn't there to help you win here, just your obtuse, misguided, uneducated sense of right and wrong.
"her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit"
I believe that they are talking about Eve biting into the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden in the Bible
Not at all.
Not at all.
Again your retarded criticalthinking you told @deathofhonor in a previous comment "it's what you think someone meant who themselves where quoting someone else and taking the quote out of it's context and giving it a completely new meaning." Your doing the exact same thing. Try not to contradict yourself when you tell someone they're wrong. Cause in reality, the only one who's wrong is you. Music is an art. Art is meant for the interpretation of whomever comes into contact with it. The author has a meaning behind their art, but also wants it to mean different things to different...

You're entire reply is erroneous as you failed to understand the basic premise of my argument. I'm not going to bother with explaining it to you because I feel that if by now it's not entirely clear to you, then there is no hope in paraphrasing it to help you understand it.

This may or may not be true. Artist express themselves and people are witnesses of their art. You cannot assume the artist even considers the audience in his work. Perhaps in some musical acts this would apply but I'm afraid the wording you chose to express your thought makes it incorrect in most situations. Why would TDWP quote someone else's words to convey a different message? Why not write an entirely new sentence? Logic or proper spelling and syntax are not your strong points. You're plenty fucking stupid though I'll give you that!
Great song! I'm gonna try to come up with an interpretation, but all i have to say for now is FEAR BEAUTY!
It's about Adam and Eve :D
Try again!
Try again!
i think he's saying make me stronger and make me invulnerable against waves of sin and temptation. and i do agree with coryyy about the adam and even when it talks about eve biting into the apple "scarlet fruit"
Go read a book!
Go read a book!
yeah...its from the book "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, i still have yet to read it, but i doubt its about adam and eve

You've done your homework. I'm happy to see that not all TDWP fans are dimwits.

I don't see what "Her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit" has to do with Adam and Eve, or any of this song for that matter, but everyone has the right to their own opinion. I believe that line is saying whoever the subject of this song is (a beautiful woman) has perfectly white teeth that show like white seeds in the reddest (scarlet) of fruit. I'm not too sure what the rest of the song means but if you look at the context of that quote in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" it deals with the death of someone in the novel, I haven't read the book recently enough to remember though
I Love This Song!!!!!=]] By the way it's "This I Beg Of You" not This is Beg Of You.
I agree with it being about Adam and Eve. I think it has to do about ho Adam felt for Eve and even though he knew it was wrong to eat the fruit he couldn't resist her beauty. when he says "I Decided to Name Her Insomia" I think of him loving her so much he can't sleep because of his feelings. IDK that's my take on it.
