Reunion Tour Lyrics

Rolling cables slick with beer
to hang up on the broken stands
the houselights lit our injuries
for crowds with plastic cups that clapped
beneath our tender sleepy brooms
and boom boom boom boom
went absent cases down the stairs
into the parking lot out back
a burst of moon
a blast of air
an understanding somewhere
between the turning signal clicks
the shiny food we found with gasoline
the daily prayers of set-lists tender jokes about
retards and crashes and queers
I lost the chiming ring of keys to everything
I lost the chiming ring of keys to everything
I lost the chiming ring of keys to everything
safe and safely locked away back home
safe and safely locked away back home
safe and safely locked away back home
safe and safely locked away back home

JKS said that this song was based on the band Great White, who caused 100 deaths when their pyrotechnics went...well, horribly awry during a show and the venue caught on fire. I think beyond that there's also a lot to be read in this song about basically the billions of asshole bands in existence who break up in a way that seems like they just want to market getting back together down the road. I think that "Reunion Tour" doesn't refer to the Weakerthans -- who never broke up -- but is actually more of a criticism of the bands who do. At least for this song. The album title I think refers more to the superseding theme of reuniting (or not reuniting) that's in the other songs.

Even though this song is the album's namesake (is that the right way of putting it?) This was one of my least favourite songs on the album.

I think it's about being glad to be home after being on tour. There is a lot more substance but that's the general idea of the song.

kviii, thanks for that backstory. This really is a very vague song. Not much to read into. The boom boom part makes a lot of sense now.

Musically, this is one of my favourites on the album.

This song is such a great surprise on the album. I really love it, musically (wish it went longer) and lyrically - "between the turning signal clicks" is such a simple and evocative line. But that little 'chiming ring' sound effect borders on lame - it sounds someone SMS alert rather than a part of the song.

I disagree with the last comment. Don't think this song has anything at all to do with that unfortunate incident with Great White. Rather, it's about why the Weakerthans stopped touring for so long. They lost the urge to. "I lost the chiming ring of keys to everything..." says it all. JKS lost his enthusiasm for all of those trappings of being a touring band; the beer-soaked cables, the hot venue atmosphere, the roadies loading up their equipment after each show, the overtold jokes, et cetera. He wanted to be back home. That's what I think this song is about. It's an explanation for their absence.
