Monsters Of The Deep Lyrics

Is there a promised land?
Or am I on the journey going to nowhere?
Are the streets paved with gold?
Or am I slipping on the mold that slowly grows there?

Every man has his conscience, sanity

Left along the way
Carried in this vessel
Setting forth together now
Out towards the Monsters Of The Deep

Set your sights on rocky shores
You just might run aground on the reef
The journeys in the destination
Mention fear, you're falling on deaf ears

Every man has his conscience, sanity

Left along the way
Carried in this vessel
Setting forth together now
Out towards the Monsters Of The Deep

Aye, Aye

Left along the way
Carried in this vessel
Setting forth together now
Out towards the Monsters Of The Deep

Dez was raised a catholic, but read his lyrics and it becomes painfully apparent that he has turned from that path: "Is there a promised land? Or am I on the journey going to nowhere? Are the streets paved with gold? Or am I slipping on the mold that slowly grows there?" -Hes questioning his faith..

The songs general meaning however is that he seems to feel that 'god' has equally turned his back on him as he had to 'god', and that all the promises made were simply lies... The entire album seems to be a possible medium by which he describes the terms of his beliefs on religion, namely christianity

I always took a majority of lyrics being directed at another person who betrayed him but I like the idea of it being a deconversion manifesto

Maybe it's simultaneously and at different parts of the album a rejection of abusive people, abusive religions, and abusive self talk

To me, the overarching theme is putting the bullshit aside and ceasing the excuses. Whether this is breaking up with a toxic friend, religion, or self, the point is personal responsibility and letting go of being a victim to life. It's a much needed slap in the face. Finding that inner strength to carve your life

Apparently this song has to do with sailing to a promised land, such as an after life and possibly questioning its existence.

living life, the monsters are obstacles, really just looking forward in life knowing there will be hard times, but you will be rewarded. But i dont think dez is christian or believes in god so im probably wrong.

@YourNameHere117 you don't need to be a Christian to recognize the benefit in pushing thru hardship to reach the benefit on the other side

In fact, one thing I think Christians get wrong is thinking they have some secret knowledge about life. Yes, the lessons learned in the gospels can be powerful but it's pointing to something about the human experience, acting like you can only reach this understanding thru Christianity is silly and elitist

i think he may be saying something about HP Lovecraft and the cthulhu. what with monsters of the deep and getting caught on a reef which is in a story of lovecrafts. Also he talks of sanity and conscience and these play a role in the novels.
