(first comment) This song, in my mind, describes what happens when you turn away from God and His advice.
The point is that people can believe whatever they think a song means. It's not wrong. The beauty of music how you interpret it. It's all about perspectives.
But if you want to be technical, it was written as a christian seeing as Trevor explained it's intended meaning in a concert I went to a long while back.
I think this story is progressive. This guy is trying to make it morally on his own steam and realizes he cant. And then it all becomes clear why this is the case: he stopped relying on God.

This is how I've felt when I realize how pitiful my best efforts are. God just lifts us up when we throw ourselves on him.

x7x: so what if it doesn't have to have a literal meaning to God? For me, personally, I know what it's like when I begin to stray from God. My life pretty much becomes misery cuz God is the only One who can keep me together. A lot of songs don't always relate to us they way they relate to the artist, as I'm sure you already know, so why even freak out about it?
I don't see why you would get upset and declare a song from a Christian band a "secular" song. It can't be anything else. it's just too obvious what they are talking about. It can't be a girl cause thats just too cliche and way below these guys. No girl is gonna cause your world to fall apart the way god is.
Adam, on what basis should I 'believe you'? It doesn't even make sense without it being a God-based song. From whom is he walking away? And what is this whole business about "every time he tries to help someone he messes up..." What lyrics are you basing this on?

I agree with Invader Tak. This song talks about how you take your eyes off Christ, then things start to fall apart.
