I think he felt all along he'd be with her indefinitely and now it hurts him to come to the realization that the love they once shared so passionately has disappeared. He can no longer fight it and decides it's best to end it.
If he could script it, he'd write it differently. But he knows doing so wouldn't be staying true to himself. And he's been thinking about telling her it has to end for some time. He's finally gotten the courage to do it.

This has got to be the very best break up song EVER. It is so beautiful and sweet even, most break up songs have feeling but not a loving one like this does. There are still feelings in the relationship and he does not want to have that turn to hate so it is time to part ways. Makes sense to me.
