Die Lyrics
And though our fathers' fathers slept in stolen houses
All that's over now
And our babies never cry
And we can look you in the eye
And say, "We're not afraid to die"
And yes, our mothers' mothers saw in black and white
But all that's over now
And our children never lie
And no matter how we try
We are not afraid to die
All that's over now
And our babies never cry
And we can look you in the eye
And say, "We're not afraid to die"
But all that's over now
And our children never lie
And no matter how we try
We are not afraid to die

tHERE IS A YOUTUBE VIDEO WHERE SAM PLAYS THIS IN AN ELEVATOR....GREAT DOWNLOAD 4 THOSE WHO KNOW HOW...I HIGHLY RECOMEND IT....
By the way... these lyrics are not put together correctly ..so ...someone should fix that
An exercise in correct apostrophication as well as a lovely song.
coming from acadiana, this song really hits close to home.
Being naive, I was somewhat concerned by this last comment that the song relates to the Acadian exodus primarily, but I'm hopeful that this is Sam's apologia-of-sorts and celebration of the Obama election. Please tell me if I am wrong. Health insurance for all!!

I read this song kind of cynically. The logic of the lyrics is "It's true that our days of wrongdoing are over, that our babies never cry and that our kids never lie, so it is also true that we aren't afraid to die." To me, it says "I'm lying... people now still steal, they still hate, they still do wrong, of course our babies cry and our children lie, it's impossible not to! And because of the fact that we're lying about all that, we're also lying about not being afraid to die. Everyone is."
peely, i'll have to agree with you. to me, this song is a focus on things not changing. at least, on human nature not changing.
Dark Was The Night is a compilation for Red Hot which is a charity concernin HIV/AIDS and i think this song has a peticular significance to that. Though all of these idealistic images seem foiled there is still hope and strength in us. The paradoxes in the song give us the real message. Not just applicable to dying but to all the unknown ahead of us. We are afraid but we are strong and that over shadows the fear.
something along those lines maybe?
