Ashes and Wine Lyrics
Don't know what to do anymore
I've lost the only love worth fighting for
I'll drown in my tear storming sea
That would show you,
That would make you hurt like me
All the same,
I don't want mud-slinging games
It's just a shame
To let you walk away
Is there a chance,
A fragment of light
At the end of the tunnel,
A reason to fight
Is there a chance
You may change your mind
Or are we ashes in wine?
Don’t know if our fate’s already sealed
This day’s a spinning circus on a wheel
And I’m ill with the thought of your kiss
Coffee laced, intoxicating on her lips
Shut it out
I’ve got no claim on you now
Not allowed
To wear your freedom down
Is there a chance,
A fragment of light
At the end of the tunnel,
A reason to fight
Is there a chance
You may change your mind
Or are we ashes in wine?
I’ll tear myself away
That is what you need
There is nothing left to say, but
Is there a chance,
A fragment of light
At the end of the tunnel,
A reason to fight
Is there a chance
You may change your mind
Or are we ashes in wine?
I've lost the only love worth fighting for
I'll drown in my tear storming sea
That would show you,
That would make you hurt like me
I don't want mud-slinging games
It's just a shame
To let you walk away
A fragment of light
At the end of the tunnel,
A reason to fight
Is there a chance
You may change your mind
Or are we ashes in wine?
This day’s a spinning circus on a wheel
And I’m ill with the thought of your kiss
Coffee laced, intoxicating on her lips
I’ve got no claim on you now
Not allowed
To wear your freedom down
A fragment of light
At the end of the tunnel,
A reason to fight
Is there a chance
You may change your mind
Or are we ashes in wine?
That is what you need
There is nothing left to say, but
A fragment of light
At the end of the tunnel,
A reason to fight
Is there a chance
You may change your mind
Or are we ashes in wine?

The significance of "Ashes and Wine"
Is that Ashes are not soluble (Unable to dissolve) in wine....
Which I take into meaning...Her and this man just dont mix.
This so is so beautiful. I love the lyrics. I somewhat relate and it hurts like crazy.
i think its about how you really love someone and they love you to but they are with someone else who they also love. your trying to get them to break up so you can be together but there to scared to leave the person there with and take a chance on a new relationship even tho it would probably be better then current one when she says "is there a chance you may change your mind" she means is there a chance that ther person will end up breaking things off with the other person and being with the other one
worst feeling ever..
I understand Alison Sudol loves and is inspired by great literature. The lyric in the song -- "ashes in wine" -- maybe it has some relationship to Greek legend of a woman drinking her lover's ashes in wine and to an ancient epitaph: "We, the dead, are only bones and ashes: waste no precious ointments or wreaths upon our tomb, for it is only marble; kindle no funeral pyre, for it is useless extravagance. If you have anything to give, give it while I am alive; but if you steep ashes in wine you only make mud, for the dead man does not drink." (as quoted in an essay on Omar Khayyam by Nathan Haskell Dole in the "Library of the World's Best Literature, Ancient and Modern", page 8456 [retrieved from Google Books]. Of course, even if Alison Sudol were playing off this theme, it does not "fix" the meaning of her song, but I think it helps to consider it as having less direct meanings and multiple layers of meaning. It is a great, great song.
At first, I wasn't sure what was meant by "ashes and wine". I read all the posts on this site, and could see most of everyone's interpretations, but none seemed to be quite right. Then it hit me: I think both ashes and wine are both things that are used up. An ash used to be a log, cigarette, etc. Wine used to be a grape. Both of them have lost their ability to ever change or be anything different than simply ashes and wine. The entire song is about whether there is hope or whether fate has already spoken. If they were cigarettes and grapes... they'd still have a chance; if they are ashes and wine, they are done.
This song is soo sad! I think its about her losing someone she really loved. And she really wants to be with him still but they are opposites.
I definitely think this is one of the prettiest songs on the album. I think a lot of people can relate...I think it's about not really wanting to let someone go, knowing you have to...because they want to leave for one reason or another. It's kind of sad.
i think the song is pretty easy to understand, and just as easy to relate to
"This day’s a spinning circus on a wheel" i think that is one of my favorite lines from any song
I could swear on a stack of phonebooks that this song is called Ashes AND Wine.
That said, this is probably my second favorite A Fine Frenzy song (behind Almost Lover). It's simply beautiful.
you know those songs that feel like they are written about your life?
my boyfriend got expelled from boarding school and i let him live with me for a period of time, where we spent every day and night together. then he went back to atlanta, ga. and a week later told me he could no longer do long distance and dumped me.
see? describes my situation perfectly. and its the best song on the album. along with rangers and almost lover.
