The Beacon Lyrics
You're tired of waking up
Don't be obscene, I can't conceive of
Living without you
You say you drag me down
No one should want you now
I start to cry, you kiss my eyes and say
I'm not allowed to
Can't feel its heat, or see its light
That single solitary guide, it must get lonely there sometimes
Lessons of love untaught
Now no embrace can quite replace
The one that never found you
I was raised tenderly
All that was taught to me
I will apply, your parents tried but they didn't know how to
Can't feel its heat, or see its light
That single solitary guide, it must get lonely there sometimes
Honor is mine
Let me stand by you
Loneliest light, loneliest light, loneliest light
This song is about her grief over the death of her love, maybe by suicide he died? "You say your time has come You're tired of waking up". Or because he left her? The beacon is her heart, her love = the flame its burning for him, and she cant feel the "heat" or see the "light" because hes not with her anymore by death or etc. I can also see this song meaning that he did not know how to be in a relationship because he just wasn't ready or knew how to, how to treat her right and love her right. She says "You say you drag me down No one should want you now I start to cry, you kiss my eyes and say I'm not allowed to" He is leaving her and tells her he doesnt deserve her and that shes better off. And at some points its almost like shes frustrated at the fact that he left because she wasnt ready she didnt get closure.
I think is song is about a girl that's with someone who doesn't know how to love. The guy was raised by parents who didn't know how to show him they loved him so his whole life he's searched for that love. The girl wants to stand by him, and use the love her parents showed her to give him the love he's longed for. He is afraid of bringing her down, that he isn't good enough for her but she knows he is worth it. She wants to let him feel love so he is no longer lonely.
I love this song! It is so beautiful!
I have to agree with wimsicle I don't think the song has much to do about suicide but more with someone who was never really shown emotion and now has a hard time dealing with them...

I think this is about a relationship and the male has a low self esteem because of how he was raised. His parents never showed him love, so he never learned how to love another. He is used to being alone, which she thinks will get lonely. He thinks that he is bringing her down and she deserves better, but she knows that he is wrong because they love each other, he just needs to be more confident. She sees a "burning beacon", some sort of signal that makes her think, or know, that they are right for each other and once he realizes their love, they will go far together.
a personally think its about suicide.

i agree in a way /but it's not a girl singing to a guy, or a guy singing to a guy or a guy singing to a guy, it's anyone singing to anyone, for any kind of love. It could even be a friendship. that's what i love about this song.

oh, this is so sad, yet bittersweet.
She really is amazing at writing ballads! Beautiful.
Makes me cry. Sings to my soul
agreed, bittersweet.
i agree with jakychap. seems like if someone was "tired of waking up" they don't want to be alive anymore. it's a complex thing dealing with the suicide of someone you love because no matter how hard you try to make them feel wanted (You were a child forgot lessons of love untaught. Now no embrace can quite replace The one that never found you) if they don't love themselves then there's nothing you can do and have no choice but to let it happen. this song is amazing. i love it.
beautiful song, I love her album.
I think she's singing to her friend who happens to be single and lonely and just wants to give up. When she says "Now no embrace can quite replace, The one that never found you". She's telling her she's beautiful and she understands her loneliness and she'll stand by her through this hard time.
I think this song may be about someone who is close to a friend or someone who is thinking about commiting suicide. "You're tired of waking up." giving up on life, and when she cries he doesn't want her to, since it's not her fault they feel that way. The singer feels bad for him, and doesn't want him to go, "When i start to cry, you say i'm not allowed to." The person who feels like giving up has tried reaching out to his parents "you're parents tried but they didnt know how to." Which could also lead to the suicide thing, since he doesnt know how to better himself since he was never taught. The singer wants to stay by his side, but he's pushing away, trying to convince her that it's okay. "Let me stand by your side." But no matter what she says he wants to give up. The 'burning beacon in the night' is like a light of hope, salvation if you will. but it cannot reach her friend. "can't feel it's heat." He is too far gone into the mind set of letting everything go.
Maybe it's because i've got through a situation like this, but that's what it reminds me of. Might not be it, but could be?
