Starving Your Friends Lyrics

Thanks a lot
I've been disadvantaged from the start
You constrict the veins heading straight to my head
Rerouted the blood to my heart instead
Rerouted the blood to my heart instead

I am braindead
Thinking strictly in blues and reds
Oh, I'm in enough trouble, man
Oh, man, I'm in trouble again
Cause everyone's ears are watching me
But I never, ever felt that this would be
Anything more than a makeshift personal IV

Cause I fall three times as hard
If it's from nothing at all
You all seem twice as tall as I will ever be
Cause I feel terribly small
When my head works too hard
When you think with your chest
There's not a thing that you don't see

I'm hardly capable of half the damage
That I would like to do
I could swear that I don't care
But you know I'm too full of shit to think this through
So look at me
I pray to God
But curse too much to be considered true
I'm just like me
I'm just like me
So who the hell are you?

I'm but a boy
Just like the rest of these thieves
And I borrow phrases from dusty, faded record sleeves
The story is the same
I've just personalized the name
But if it's all you need
Then I'd be more than happy to confess my shame

Cause I fall three times as hard
If it's from nothing at all
You all seem twice as tall as I will ever be
Cause I feel terribly small
When my head works too hard
When you think with your chest
There's not a thing that you don't see

I'm hardly capable of half the damage
That I would like to do
I could swear that I don't care
But you know I'm too full of shit to think this through
So look at me
I pray to God
But curse too much to be considered true
I'm just like me
I'm just like me
So who the hell are you?

I know you think you know
But these eyelids are windows
That shut you out from all the things
That I don't want you to know
And I refuse to tell you one single secret I own
Cause you'll find I'm petrified of your eyes

I'm hardly capable of half the damage
That I would like to do
I could swear that I don't care
But you know I'm too full of shit to think this through
I've read the book, I prayed to God
But cursed too much to be considered true
I'm just like me
I'm just like me
So who the hell are you?

I agree that the song is probably about fame but I also link it to depression in my own mind. first, being "disadvantaged from the start."

"He constrict the veins heading straight to my head Rerouted the blood to my heart instead" refers to no longer thinking with your mind and now thinking with your heart which causes people to do things like take revenge which they may regret later.. hence.. "Thinking strictly in blues and reds Oh, I'm in enough trouble, man Oh, man, I'm in trouble again"

the part about everyone's ears watching him most likely refers to fans of the band constantly watching and listening but can also transfer over to the paranoia that accompanies depression.

"I never, ever felt that this would be Anything more than a makeshift personal IV." Attempting to make your own life support and then finding that maybe it's more helpful to help yourself than you thought it was. A lot of the time therapists can only help a certain amount and even then only if you're ready. you need to take care of yourself as well.

"Cause I fall three times as hard If it's from nothing at all." definitely sounds like depression to me, feeling down for no reason and falling so hard.

"When you think with your chest, There's not a thing that you don't see." this reminds me of some people choosing to ignore things like signs of an unfaithful partner but when you spend your time thinking with your heart you don't miss those things and sometimes blow them out of proportion into something they're not.

"I'm hardly capable of half the damage that I would like to do. I could swear that I don't care, But you know I'm too full of shit to think this through." again sounds like wishing to take revenge on the people that you blame for your problems, like a parent or an ex though not ever being able to actually do the damage you wish you could.

"I pray to God But curse too much to be considered true." reminds me of the times I've prayed for a solution, though not actually believing there is a god to help me.

"Just like the rest of these thieves. I borrow phrases, from dusty, faded, record sleeves. The story is the same. I've just personalized the name." is a part of the song that is only really about the original meaning, people stealing song lyrics and ideas and changing them slightly to claim as their own.

last, "I know you think you know, But these eyelids are windows that shut you out from all the things that I don't want you to know. And I refuse to tell you one single secret I own." could be the fear of people knowing what you think or what you want to do deep down. It also reminds me of therapists thinking they know everything about your mind when really they have no idea.

So that's my twisted take on it :P :) hope that opened people eyes to somethinorother :) Narnie xx

I am braindead, Thinking in strictly in blues and reds. I'm in enough trouble man... Oh man, I'm in trouble again. Cause everyone's ears are watching me, But I never, ever felt that this would be Anything more than a makeshift personal TV.

I fall three times as hard. If it's from nothing at all You all seem twice as tall as I will ever be. 'Cause I feel terribly small. When my head works too hard. When you think with your chest, There's not a thing that you don't see.

makeshift personal "TV"?

Why is everyones saying TV..

I.V. you know, the bag of liquid they put in your veins at the hospital.

Word... Oscar's right.. who the hell is hearing TV.. lol. And to Meaculpa it's "Thinking strictly in blues and reds" and "These eyelids are windows"... cuz he's saying that they shut her out from the things he doesn't want her to know... People read other peoples eyes... so I think that's what he's getting at.

This song also seems to be about struggling to make it big... Even the name suggests it. Starving your friends... cuz on tour people tend to go hungry since there isn't that much money involved in the beginning of your career. It's either... eat well or make it to the next show. Sacrifice. And he's basically saying stuff about how he feels like everyone is twice as tall as him or w/e cuz they're already up there.. and he feels like he can't handle it. If it is about that... then I guess in the chorus... 'damage' probably means like.. his impact and stuff on the industry... And how he prays.. but (quite obviously, from the other tracks) he's not religious... and he curses through his prayers.... and all that jazz... But at least he's being himself... "Who the hell are you?" seems to be directed to sellouts.
