This is a song about the inevitable loss of everything valuable as a consequence of time/age and it combines the sacrifices made by someone who is free-spirited enough to bear more of a burden. In short, it is a great song about an older person who yearns for the things time has deprived him of. That is my interpretation anyway-I am older and this song represents how I feel often.
This is one of their best as "Jefferson Starship" as opposed the psychedlia trip themes they made in the '60's. Lovin it!
This was a bit of a hit, IIRC, when I was around 10, and not too long ago I wondered why I never hear this anymore. I heard it on Sirius/XM, and it got to me what a really good tune this is!
