Think of You Lyrics
Its one hundred and nine degrees in this crowded room
No room to breathe with walls as cold as a gallery
This is no place for me
Such hard faces in smoke
The smell lingers in my clothes
It's a bad night to be alone
But thats the way it goes
And I think of you whenever life gets me down
I think of you whenever you're not around
And you rest your bones
Somewhere far from my house
Yeah, but you still pull me home
I thought I had it figured out in a brand new life with a great big house
And green initials on the towels
I should be happy now
Well, you got yourself a family
And you planted roots down by the sea
I saw you once on the street
You didn't notice me
But I think of you whenever life gets me down
I think of you (I think of you) whenever you're not around
You rest your bones
Somewhere far from my house
Yeah, but you still pull me home
Just to put your mind at ease
You don't owe me anything
You paid me well in memories
And I think of you (I think of you) whenever life gets me down
I think of you (I think of you) whenever you're not around
And you rest your bones
Somewhere far from my house
Yeah, but you still pull me home
You still pull me home
You still pull me home
No room to breathe with walls as cold as a gallery
This is no place for me
Such hard faces in smoke
The smell lingers in my clothes
It's a bad night to be alone
But thats the way it goes
I think of you whenever you're not around
And you rest your bones
Somewhere far from my house
Yeah, but you still pull me home
And green initials on the towels
I should be happy now
Well, you got yourself a family
And you planted roots down by the sea
I saw you once on the street
You didn't notice me
I think of you (I think of you) whenever you're not around
You rest your bones
Somewhere far from my house
Yeah, but you still pull me home
You don't owe me anything
You paid me well in memories
I think of you (I think of you) whenever you're not around
And you rest your bones
Somewhere far from my house
Yeah, but you still pull me home
You still pull me home
You still pull me home

"Just to put your mind at ease You don't owe me anything You paid me well in memories"
Those three lines sum up the entire song. I can't get enough of this.
I think the line phrase, "And green initials on the towels" is supposed to mean she is married. Towels with the couple's initials, likely a wedding present. I take the phrase "I should be happy now", to mean she thought getting married would fix her desire to be with this other guy who, as at least seemingly, moved on. She is in the great big house with a new husband, but still sees him as her home.
I don't think this is a sad song at all. I think that when she's thinking of him, and it makes her happy. I figure this is a song about someone she was never entirely serious about. They had a good time with each other, and it just didn't work out...but it wasn't as agonizing when it ended as it was for her in "Almost Lover" or "Ashes and Wine". It was maybe just a little bittersweet. Two people who weren't really meant to be, but could still be friends. But he was a good guy, and she's saying she'll always remember him fondly. She can even think of him when she's feeling a bit sad, and the memories cheer her up.
"Just to put your mind at ease, you don't owe me anything. You paid me well in memories", pretty much sums it up. She is not asking for him to come back to her. The time they shared together was enough.
it's suppose to be
"such hard faces set in smoke..."
the thought of him pulls her through her day
Here we see another hint that Sudol agonized over a former love. She was obviously quite close to him. At the time of the writing of this song, he seems to have moved on to another relationship (and even started a family?) while Sudol is still reflecting on the good times as a way to get through her own bad times.
this song reminds me of someone i used to think about daily, nightly & every second in between after we parted. everyone wanted me to get my mind off of it & move on but no matter how much i tried (& i wouldn't try very hard) i couldn't think of anything else.
i don't agree with missme...i don't think that thinking about her makes him happy. She thinks of him "whenever life gets me down", which makes me think she thinks that if she had ended up with the other man, she would be happier, her life would be better, etc. I think she's rather melancholy because he obviously moved on, but she just pretended to.
I love this song, and I like to think it's about a girl who has a crush on a guy she went to high school, but he lives on the other side of town and she can't be gauranteed to see him becuase they don't work together, they've met at the bookstore a few times and see each other at on the street, but that's about it. They've never been in a relationship together, but they did share a few classes senior year, and were good friends. So sad, yet hopeful! I love it!
She's talking about someone she loved or still does. They've both moved on but she still thinks about him because she has good memories about him.
